Butt reveals loan plans

It is good to know that there is some planning going on with our youngsters.

It appeared for a while that there had been some neglect in this area.

Now all we need is for Ed to get a DoF in and then have all these teams being taught how to play the same way as the first team.

Chong and Gomes SHOULD be in his plans. Perhaps i could be accused of getting swallowed up by the romance of it all, but i would love to see one of those two get game time and stake their claim. And Ole is the man to give them that time i think.

Excellent Rosso, and thanks. Who do you think is the stand out player to become a regular in the first team?

I wonder where we’ll send Gomes if he goes on loan. We’ve not had much luck with loaning to prem clubs. I wonder if we might send him abroad given how well some of the other young English lads are doing, plus he’s not much taller than an Oompa Loompa.

Does Axel have a chance to become a rotational starter in our defence next season? I have high hopes for the kid, and think he can make it here.

give him a chance at least with us I say, I mean I think he would have been happy with us this year if he was offered a few cup games and to train with better players, you got to take a chance sometimes on youngsters to see what their made of and we've been lacking in that department the last few years

Depends on the next manager. He’ll have a year left on his contract this summer so we’ve a decision to make. Given we’ve extended Smalling and have a lot of cb’s, plus TFM returning, and likely going into the market for another defender he may be best off getting a loan in the premier league.

We are starting to get short on homegrown players though. Reckon Phil Jones’ contract will be extended for that reason.

I'm not regular Villa viewer but what I have seen of AT has Ben underwhelming, a view backed up by my villa supporting mates.

They've the worst defensive record in the Top 15 and all you hear form villa fans is "if only we'd kept on John Terry"

Not saying he won't make it, but I'm not sold.

Apparently he struggled badly but the new manager brought him into the centre and he was performing well. That was a few months ago, though. Think his form dropped and then he got injured and their defence has turned to shiiiiit.

I don't think any of those youngsters out on loan are going to make it at United.

That isn't to say they will not have solid careers anywhere else.

The only player who I ever thought might was James Wilson, but he gets injured more than Jones.

He's been getting rave reviews from Villa fans ever since he was moved back into the centre, they even created a chant for him.

If you read the comments of Villa fans in the media, you'' see that they really rate him.

For example...

That's just a few games!

He should be given a chance ahead of Jones and Rojo at least.

Thanks 52

Presently out on loan, I'd say Tuanzebe is the obvious one given where we have potential gaps in the squad, his versatility and where he is in his development.

I think Mitchell will get another loan in the summer. I like his attitude to his game a lot, and Hamilton, who is the closest thing we have to a Herrera in the youth setup, but needs a long while yet.

Maybe I'm not quite sure about TFM, although I hope he gets a proper chance to prove himself when he comes back.

Overall, Chong and (maybe a season or two later) Greenwood should get opportunities to stake a claim given our shortage of different options on the right side of the front line.

Gomes we have to see about. With, for me, Puigmal and Traore, he's undoubtedly amongst the most gifted footballers in the junior ranks. But he's lightweight and he isn't quick, and we know what that can mean in the modern English game.

If it were up to me, I'd be sending him on loan to a Championship team or a top tier Spanish or German side for more experience playing a quicker paced, more physical game.

I love Jones. But it's time for him to move on, I think.

It's quite sad how he's suffered with injury, because with consistent game time, I really think there might have been an exceptional player in there.

From nearly all that I've read, he's been excellent since he's been back at CB, which has always been his most natural position.

rosso, was speaking with Hengy the other day about Gomes. His size is obviously a massive concern, he’s five foot two and not particularly strong or fast. Would be a shame if this causes him to not make it to the top in the prem, despite his incredible talent.

Villa had a run of games in November/Decembe where the defence was all over the place, rosso. They concede 11 in 5 games. One was a 5-5 draw, and they conceded twice in three other games, with only one clean sheet.

Granted it wasn’t just because of him. But from what I’d read his form dropped when this bad run happened and then he got injured.

I think next season a loan to the premier league would be more beneficial for his development. He hasn’t played many senior games and is 21. That’s young for a cb, of course, but coming back to United to act as squad cover probably isn’t the best idea right now. He needs to play football.

Yep.

The potential isn't under dispute. And he might have a McTominay-esque growth spurt yet - he's still young enough for it to happen (although he's never gonna top six feet!)

He's probably going to have to be as good as Iniesta, Scholes, Modric or Coutinho to make it at the top level if he can't add some pace and power to his game. So, no pressure then

Agree. I'd give him another season out on loan. Why rush a kid into your back line?

People like to grossly overuse the famous phrase, "If they're good enough, they're old enough."

I don't have a problem with the line, at all. But for us, it should really be read as, "If they're good enough to be part of a side that can challenge for the top honours at home and in Europe, they're old enough."

It says a lot about his quality and potential that he’s made it this far in England. Especially given he was playing in higher age groups for most of it.

It’s also quite revealing as to the changing attitudes towards skilful players in this country and the way we are coaching them now. As shown by our recent successes at youth level.

I agree with that. I think many fans have a tendency to overrate the level of academy players before they’ve even made a mark at senior level. You see it with Chelsea fans as well, who are desperate for a youth player to make it at the club.

Very few academy players, even if they’ve got great potential, are good enough to make it as these clubs. And in the main are not as good as the established international footballers they are trying to usurp.

That’s what makes it so difficult to blood them into the first team at the top clubs, where results are a primary objective. Though Chelsea are terrible at giving them chances.

It's an incredibly difficult thing to do, and something we should have real pride in at United. To maintain the standards the club has whilst bringing through and integrating so many into the first team squad.

And not only that, but providing the platform for the careers of so many other successful professionals, players and coaches alike.

posted on 11/1/19

rosso, yep definitely. There’s been times where we perhaps could have done more, in terms of opportunities, but in the main we’ve done as well as any top club in the world. I mean look at Barca, the golden standard, they don’t even give many chances to their players anymore and haven’t had a player break into the first team on a regular basis for a long time.
