Spurtle, no excuses for it whatsoever mate. The club knew full well we would be competing on all fronts this season. If our squad wasn’t strong enough last season, then what the hell did they think it would be up to scratch this season without any recruitment ?Grand and Chronic can delude themselves all they like that Levy is the second coming, but Spurs have made a serious balls up by not signing a single player last summer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Moura has been a big addition this season. He played a lot and scored when Son was missing/resting. His signing last year exemplifies the typical impact of a January signing...ie very little until they have got used to the club/team/training/new country etc. Look at Suarez, a January signing who had little impact until the following seasons. VVD for Liverpool took quite a bit of time to settle in to their team.

Our current injury situation is temporary. Son finishes in the Asia Cup on 1 Feb at the latest. Lucas is now back from injury. Lamela is fit.

Spurs will have their targets. For whatever reason (and the reasons will be complicated) we did not get them in this summer. Those targets will be carefully selected to meet the criteria we set ourselves. We can maybe try and advance deals with those targets now, but no one likes to sell at this time of year.

It is highly unlikely we will buy players because at this time of year players are not generally for sale, unless you whack up the price. Is it worth overpaying for a player who will likely have little impact in the coming weeks before the main men come back from injury etc?

That is the balance to be made. Its not about being unwilling to invest in the squad, its about being careful how we invest in the squad.

Don you refuse to put any players forward, and you say anyone you do will just be shot down. The fact is that this is a tough squad to add to.

We all want an upgrade on Llorente but when you see how much game time he gets and how much Kane wants to play, its hard to find someone who will accept a secondary role. Players willing to be a sub are few and far between. Would Wilson come, knowing what his role would be? Would we pay £50m - £60m for a player as Kane back up?

I see the solution to the striker/Kane situation as one of three:

1. Have a quality youngster happy to wait his turn, developing all the while

2. Have an old head, wanting to contribute but not expecting to play all the time

3. Get an attacker who can play across the forward line, so can be used often even if not in place of Kane.

1. This sort will not really hit the ground running and will take time to really add quality to the squad. That lad from Sunderland for example.

2. We have this in Llorente - when we bought him i thought it added good experience, variety and quality to the squad. He hasnt delivered but it seemed the right sort of buy.

3. We kinda have this in Son and to a lesser extent Moura. If we added Malcolm for example, how often would he play and would it be at the cost of Son/Lucas?

At various times this season we have coped without Lucas, and without Son and without Alli. Last season and before we coped without Kane. But when they are all crooked at a key time, that is just bad luck. The solution is not straight forward and buying now will not necessarily 'save our season'

Devonshire, my point is the signings should of been made in the summer. That way we would have the required quality able to come in and cover for this injury crisis we have. The club knew Son was going to be in Asia for over a month and surely they can’t be that incompetent to think we won’t get any other injuries ? Was honestly scandalous for a club competing in the CL and on all fronts to not sign a single player, I don’t care how people try and spin it.

Devonshire, this old tired argument of “ we can’t get better than Kane so what’s the point of signing anyone “ is honestly getting boring now mate. Did Manchester City think “ we can’t get better than Aguero “?? No, they went out and got a quality striker in Jesus who is now a top player and able to come in and do a job if Aguero is injured. If you want Spurs to compete and win titles, like we are believed to be doing, then why are we always trying to make out we can’t improbe the team ? This team haven’t won anything, so how the hell cant it be improved ?

No new signings so I guess we're going to have to rely on Moura now, and hope he can play like he did against United early in the season. Probably end up getting injured in the process.

Well let’s hope he’s fit for Chelsea, he’s the only goal scorer we have now, it’s ridiculous.

Firstly, its not a question of "not being bothered", its a genuine issue. I gave the Wilson example. Top man at Bournemouth or bit part player at Spurs? He may understandably prefer to play week in and out.

I'd also say that City have a wage bill of £100m more than us. They have Aguero & Jesus, Sane & Sterling with Mahrez added to that. In many respects that's the same as us with Kane, Son, Alli, Lucas, Lamela. Slightly different types of wide attackers, but they all play across the front 3. Add Llorente and we actually have more options.

If City had Aguero out, Jesus away, Sterling & Sane injured then they'd struggle with Mahrez up top.

Look at LFCs attacking options - Salah, Mane, Firmino. Backup Sturridge & Origi. These 2 are ok but a massive step down, and not too different from our back up of Lucas & Llorente. If they had to rely on them theyd struggle like we will with Lucas & Llorente.

As for Jesus, Yes City went out and bought him and he's quality but he's 21, was bought when 18/19 and played 10 games in season 1, 29 last season....so this fits the model (1) i outlined above....young, quality ready to wait his turn but will not have instant impact!

We can improve the team but like City, its careful selection of the right player. They have spent a lot but many of their buys have been young and developed and integrated into their team in the last 2 1/2 seasons.

We have to be more selective, for many reasons, but the buys of Sanchez shows we will spend on the right player & in the right circumstances - we sold Wimmer & Walker for £63m and bought Aurier & Sanchez for pretty much the same amount.

Well the others are shortening a name for ease when typing. Winksy sounds like a kiddy fiddler.

And the fans had nothing to do with t-shirts. That was the players such as Glenn Johnson.

Devonshire, if we want to win titles and champions leagues then we need to be a bit more brave mate. This module will do us great in the short term, but as shown by Liverpool, you need to spend big on quality to mount a serious title challenge. Leicester was a complete fluke so no way can anyone use that to compare. Spurs unfortunately have to get with the times, otherwise they will fall behind its as simple as that.

posted on 22/1/19

Unless fans and the club are just happy with top 4 challenge every season and that’s it. Then fine, the current business module works. If the club want to move forward winning trophies, then they need to start putting down a marker in the transfer market and not go summer windows not signing a single player.
