The real reason we drew tonight are these three things and nothing else

1) Periera facked up
2) Rashford missed good chances
3) Burnley defended extremely well

Anything else on here is just people venting about footballers they don’t like
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's very simplistic, you've accounted for around 10 seconds of football with our mistakes.

Just admit Lukaku was terrible, Ole can't hear you it's ok, it won't effect his decision making.

Take solace in the fact Lukaku wasn't the only one who had a stinker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He really didn’t play badly

Set up Rashford for what should be a game changing chance and just before he was subbed he pulled off an incredible save from the keeper

There are 6 or 7 players who deserve slating before Lukaku does
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Pereira ALSO set Rashford up but he also had a bad game, you can't just pick single moments.

That save was made from a deflection, Lukaku was aiming somewhere else. Not that I would have cared but you're clutching at straws, he was hauled off by Ole before the 70th minute mark. That says it all.

Games like these you also need a player that can bang one in the top corner, we don’t really have many players that are good at this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd settle for one who can cross a ball. At a point in the 2nd half Young hit 5 balls in succession into the first man.

My thoughts were:

1. Pereira has only ever looked average to me and I don't think he has a future with Utd
2. Herrera makes such a difference in midfield. It looked a little like Matic was being asked to play Herrera's role so Pereira could play as a pivot and I think that was a mistake.
3. What is Phil Jones actually good at? Watch a replay of their first goal and try to figure out what he was attempting.
4. Lukaku is still too meek with the ball. He has an incredibly powerful shot and should be looking to take on defenders and drill the ball in almost every situation. Instead he's trying to play in his teammates every time. Rashford should have scored in the first half but if Lukaka was more fierce he would have made a goal for himself, Burnley's defenders aren't faster or stronger than him but he acts as though they are.
5. Mata didn't have a great game at all and we look a much better team with Rashford, Martial and Lingard who are always moving and stretching the opposition team around.
6. If Plan B is gonna be get it wide and cross it into the box its handy to have a Big Fella on the bench who can compete for those headers.
7. Fuack John Moss, worst referee out of a mediocre bunch.

I wanna know why Fred cannot get a game?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
clearly because OGS thinks he ain't ready yet. Ole had mentioned giving fred/pereira chances in a less pressured environment.

It looks like he thought a home game against burnley will be that game for pereira but the burnley that turned up in the game today would have troubled most

Benched, yeah that’s an issue I already addressed. But even the best crossers of the ball can struggle to create chances against such a packed box, so you need a player that can stick one in from distance.

---------------------
At the risk of writing off a young player (something I never really like to do) I've always struggled to see what others are apparently seeing in him.

Not just based on tonight. He's a tidy player but I've seen nothing to suggest he could be any better than Tom Cleverley tbh.

Can’t legislate for Pereira putting them through 3v1, or Rashford missing two golden chances, or Heaton having a blinder. On another day we win that game comfortably.

Changes were always likely to disrupt us, but I think they were necessary on balance. We need to use the squad.

You don't need big giants in order to get goals from crosses (though it does help)

Accurate, whipped crosses played in as defenders are running back and attackers running in are more useful that lofted crosses in when there are 10 men in the box.
Young feints a couple of times then half heartedly kicks the ball in when the defence is set. It's why so many find the first man.

I still believe we will get top 4. Just one of those days, Burnley defended very well

This is too black and white, just like your assessments of Jose and other topics.

The whole performance was lethargic. The pressing, movement and fast passing we have seen wasn't there.

There reasons are obvious, Lingard, Martial, Herrera were missing. In their place were players who like to take more touches, are slow and don't work off the ball.

I suppose Smeagpl is a reference to Ole, though I've not heard it before.
If that's it does it mean he's not as handsome as Klopp? Good Lord, hard to credit, we must get a new manager at once someone good looking

I think he is a tidy metronome. Moves the ball quickly and has a range of passing as well as a decent shot.

He lost the ball while trying to play from deep because our CBs are incapable of doing so. It happens. Fernandinho will likely make the PFA team of the year and made a similar mistake tonight.

Anybody who thinks Lukaku was good tonight shouldn't be watching football.

There were poor performances throughout the side but I think the points made above contributed.

It was our most dominant game of the season. Missed chances and Burnley being clinical stopped us winning.

Honestly can't recall all us playing a better 2nd half since maybe the 0-0 draw against Burnley.

The main thing is if we keep playing well we are more closer to winning trophies than not.

posted on 29/1/19

But even when Young got it whipped in early it just ended being cleared because their box was so packed.

We needed to move the ball quicker into the right positions to catch their defence off guard and creating space between the defenders and the keeper - the midfield are at fault for a lot of this due to not finding the full backs in dangerous enough positions.

But even then, as City showed tonight, sometimes it’s just incredibly difficult when the opponents defend well and have so many men in their own box.

You must have not seen the mishit, deflected shot from 5 yards out that their keeper saved.

World class from the Belgian. Had Burnley on the rack. Their defenders were hugging each other when they saw his number come up on the sub board.

He's a far better player too.

pereira is no number 6

he is a number 10 or number 8

I have said this many times he does his best work higher up the pitch

the problem for him is there are too many people ahead of him in the #10 queue.
so he has to play as #8 which can very quickly become #6 the way we play.

Ji

True about McTominay, but that’s tells you more about many of the idiots who are far too harsh on certain players. Young and inexperienced players will always make mistakes, it’s all about how you react and learn from them. Results like these happen all the time, look at city, some people just need to accept this from tome to tone.

Yes, also very different types of player. Point I was making is his mistake won't be looked at in isolation as we shouldn't for Pereira.

Lukaku is not my sort of player, however I genuinely don't understand what he did wrong today. Rashford scores that first goal and I am confident we would've won that game.

Agree with this too. I mean id rather play Matic over him any day of week and that's saying something.

Missed Martial tonight. I don’t actually think he’s played that well under Ole, similar performances to what we’ve seen since he’s been here, but his dribbling ability could have helped make a difference against a packed defence. He can, and does, draw defenders towards him when he’s dribbling in the box and has that ability to make that little bit of extra space to get a shot off. This is an area he really trumps Rashford, and probably the only forward we have in the squad that quality.

How poor was Sanchez when he came on?? Poor passes.
