Right so it’s bad tactics with you but with Jose it was downing tools, even though we came back from one or two goals down in many of his final games at the club to grab a result. Gotcha.

Eh I’ve not even mentioned Jose?

We reached the FA Cup final in Mancinis final year and the Champions League semi final in Pellegrinis. I wish we downed tools more often 😭

Reaching the FA Cup final definitely sounds better than losing to a relegated Wigan at Wembley. Good effort though.

Sounds more like a dipper, to be honest. They love boasting about getting to finals and net spend.

And did you remember those performances in both matches?the semi final was pitiful, you just let Real have any shot they wanted at your goal. Zero effort.

Not true. There were very shows shots on target in either leg - largely down to how Pellegrini set up, which was hugely disappointing, though we also played our part tbh.

All in all it made for one of the most boring CL semis in living memory.

On a broader note, I can't imagine a single footballer on earth downing tools for a CL semi-final.

My bad, it was Loz that said the comment on Jose

I don’t think Pellegrini and Jose are comparable really. It wasn’t issues with the players, Pellegrini in the end just wasn’t a good enough manager to match’s the ambition of the club, backed up by the fact he’s now at West Ham 🙈

You’ve got players who look like completely different people since Jose left, and with the results, I can see why people would claim that. Mancini too really.

I think Pellegrini was always viewed by the club as a stepping stone towards Pep. Turned out to be his own man though.

You're slipping mate. Its old age. Fortunately you have a protege ready to step into the breach when the time arrives.

A player who'll always be synonymous with a very dark period of mediocrity.

The fact we had to rely on him in the way we did and as often as we did just goes to show how bad things were on the pitch.

Looking back at the summer of 2013 though, I actually thought that despite not being anywhere near my first choice he might do well with us, however that always came with the caveat of us further improving the midfield and I think quite a few on here thought similar at the time although I reckon some wouldn't care to admit it now.

My memory of that summer is a bit hazy but it seemed at one stage Moyes wanted a creative midfielder above all else. Obviously Thiago was heavily rumoured, as was Fabregas and to a lesser extent the likes of Banega and Gundogan.

So it was really odd that he eventually settled for Fellaini only when that was said to the case.

I'm still of the opinion that there was a certain amount of panic about the signing on Moyes's part.

I don't think there's any doubt about it... He had a release fee of 17 million i think from memory... We'd have triggered it and signed him early if we'd been that set on him

The disaster of missing everyone else meant we signed him

Imagine if we'd have managed to sign him when we were "begging" him not to agree a new deal with Liege before he moved to Everton.

Could have been at United for ten years. We'd have been talking about a testimonial about now...

SAF really did have a few shockers in the transfer windows. This would have been another.
