I am not sure he said it was inflammatory.

By implication Clarke was calling for Defoe to be cited for diving.

He can hide behind calls for consistency all he wants. But when you are about to play the team in a big cup tie and you are calling for their striker to be suspended you need to expect a bit of feedback.

“One of our players (Jordan Jones) was suspended for two games earlier in the season for going to ground too easily.

“There was a media furore. A witch hunt against the player. Nothing on the same scale from Saturday’s game, Rangers versus St Mirren.

“Hopefully the compliance officer (Clare Whyte) will do her job. It doesn’t affect us, I am nor particularly advocating (a sanction), but I just want consistency.

“So if our player gets a two-game ban, I look forward to seeing what happens this week.”

The point that SG objects to is that SC in his drive for consistency clearly has an expectation that Defoe would be cited and banned.

He is careful to 1. not name the player and 2.not call for a ban directly.

Neither of which make him look as clever as he thinks they do. And correctly neither protect him from the inevitable ire of SG.

His main problem though is that he is working on the assumption that the Defoe incident and the Jones incident were identical.

Which they clearly were not.
