The planet is over populated.

This is the cause of many of our problems. Excessive use of natural resources. Expanding in to wild areas at the cost of the environment and wildlife.

Problem is our way of living is based on growth. We need population growth to sustain growth of the economy/businesses etc

I really do not think that not running the tap when cleaning our teeth or walking to work every now and then is going to make much of a difference.

Drastic measures are needed. If we do not find these then nature will.

Go vegan.

I've not done anything to be honest which makes me feel bad when I think about it, other than the absolute minimum like recycling wherever possible at home into the different bins we're provided with.

I've tried to stop buying bottled water as I used to buy 4 or 5 bottles a week, so I guess that's a small change I've made.

I know it sounds bad and pretty lazy, but what else can regular folk do, within their normal day to day lives? What changes can we make? Genuinely asking.

The planet will wipe most humans out eventually, only then will it start to recover. Humans are self-important caants in the grand scheme of things, why are we special? Other animals have gone extinct or become endangered for one reason or another, I don't see why we deserve better.

Rant over. And no I'm not a vegan.

I'm here to tear down everything around you,
And you know what I'm going to replace it with?
God. The world of God.
So take your bread and give it to the poor.
What difference does it matter what you own?
You have gold and silver it's going to rot,
And that rot is going to eat away your heart.
All of you. There will be a flood and there will be a fire.
Everything will be destroyed.
But there will be a new ark riding on that fire and I hold the keys,
And I open the door, and I decide who goes in and who doesn't.

You think God will answer only to you?
He doesn't.
Godґs an immortal spirit who belongs to everybody - to the whole world.
You think your special?
God is not an Israelite.
In the desert the baptists warned us, God is coming.
But I'm telling you it's too late.
He's already here.
I'm here.
And I'm going to baptize everybody... With fire!

Come with me...

In the name of the prophet,
In the name of Jerimiah, the father,
In the name of the most holy...

I call you here!

Though not the only reason, me and my wife have decided not to have kids and over population is certainly one of the key reasons. I also think the world is going to change very rapidly in our life, let alone the life of any children we brought into the world.

I kind of have to distract myself to not fall into a pit of despair about it all. Just yesterday I was reading that butterfly numbers are down 58% in the last 9 years... NINE years!

As much stick as millennials get though, I do think they are a beacon of hope. They seem far more switched on about these issues. Whether it will ever be enough for the major sea change required, time will tell.

As long as greedy, corrupt people can reach the highest levels of power, it is hard to see anything but a very bleak future.

I've spoken to and otherwise heard about quite a lot of people who have decided not to have kids, for various reasons. My wife and I aren't planning on having any.

That's a choice that many (at least think they) have in the developed and affluent West, where people enjoy the luxuries of pension funds, unlockable capital in properties, social care, state provision of healthcare, etc.

In developing (and flat poor, because not everywhere is developing) parts of the world, people will see that they'll need to have children to support them in their retirements or in case of ill health unless, of course, we see more serious investment in lifting Africa and large parts of Asia and South America out of poverty.

I'm not about to post a bunch of ideas in response to my own question, because I'm interested in what other people are thinking and doing (sorry!), but there's all kinds you could think about in terms of travel (how far, how often, and how!), what kind of food you eat and when, and your shopping habits.

Yeah alright Malthus.

Overpopulation is a narrative spread to absolve the rich-West of blame. The carbon footprint on us Europeans and across the Atlantic isn't comparable to anyone in the developing world.

If there was that much of a crisis something would be done about it..

Pollution has been sorted with more and more electric cars

We will eventually not need to eat meat due to alternatives being not too different.. Not the quorn rubbish.

Once theres an actual crisis.. something will be done..

Aw the wee africans need to stop procreating for a start though

posted on 12/2/19

Cutting back big time on meat but could do better in many regards

We're so facked and it's unbelievable that little is being done in terms of international policy... that's the only way this ever gets tackled effectively

I’ve changed the heating in our home to carbon neutral. I grow my own veg. I walk instead of taking the car when possible. I recycle. I have turned down the thermostat a couple of degrees. I have gone for energy efficient light bulbs.
Mostly what a lot of other people have done. Not sure what else I can do apart from lowering the amount of texh I buy (not much room for improvement there though).
Change will have ti happen with big business and industry, but I won’t hold by breath.

I don't think anything we do as individuals will have a massive effect but as it appears politicians won't do anything I guess we have to at least try. So in your answer to your question, and to be honest you probably already so some of these but don't realise:

- stop buying single use plastics like water bottles
- get bags for life
- don't print out unnecessarily/ask for things like bank statements to be sent via email
- car pool to work if someone lives near you or take public transport
- plant more vegetation if you have a garden or grow your own vegetables if you have space
- turn off electrics when not in use.

Just little things here and there really.
