Bollix..... I don't want Liverpool, City Or United to beat Burnley in the Prem ! Why should I want them to beat someone like PSG in the CL. Lose the "Island nation: mentality" mate..... Its killing the country..... Its 2019 not 1945. Its a competition based on clubs, has nothing to do with countries

English teams like Liverpool has what two English players in the team last night, German coach, American owners, money from foreign fans etc. There’s very little about the top teams in England that is actually English.

It's not really an Island nation mentality, it's more of a supporting your own nation's clubs when they play abroad for the good of all the clubs in the land. I think local support would make the teams perform better, and the better the teams perform the more likely it is more teams from the same country will play better in those competitions- a chain reaction if you will. Just look at a decade ago when Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, and heck even Arsenal went to a final.

If City, Utd, and Liverpool get into the last 4, that will make Spurs believe they can go further in the competition as well. "If they can do it, why can't we?"

I don't think supporting teams from your own country is killing the country. It's myopia like you display, if anything.

The fans who represent the clubs are English/ British. That goes a long way. You can't spell sport without support <wink>

I want them to lose every week in the league, why would that change in Europe? If say Utd won the CL I'd have to put up with smug Utd fans even more than usual - no thanks.

If Shalke made it into the last four it would have more of bearing on how Spurs should think..... Got more in common with them as a club Vs "Moneybag:" clubs that just happen to be from the same country

it's ok for you plastic fans us real fans actually have to deal with our rival fans boasting, in the comments section of our live streams. Football is more than just the results, it's the banter with the anonymous online posters that goes with it.

I don't like any of our European representatives other than the obvious so why would I want any of them to win? The only time this changes is when any of them play a team from north of the border.

My motives are all selfish.

I want Liverpool to have the toughest draw, so that their resources are stretched. In the ideal world they get a 0-0 in Bayern and it goes to ET....if they get through fine, another tough draw please. If they dont then i want it to be as crushing as a defeat as possible. All this might give us an edge in the title race.

If we are not involved in the title or whatever then I am not really bothered how other English teams do. There are a few European teams l like more than some English teams, so will not always favour english over other.

Someone posted this very topic some time ago.

I was brought up to follow or adopt my parents’ example and show loyalty whenever our nation’s clubs were being televised in European Finals or SF’s. Early examples were West Ham-TSV Munich in 1965 (which I can just about recall), Liverpool-Borussia Dortmund the following year, then Celtic-Inter Milan in 1967 and Manchester United-Benfica in ‘68. The entire household was usually together and the loudest shouting would come from my mother.

Times and attitudes have changed but I won’t swerve. I know there are millions like me who won’t change their ways or take a different stance.

I used to feel this way but must admit the years of tribalism have pushed me away from it.

I only hope they go far if it benefits us (ie I hope United go further in CL to keep them distracted).

Other than that never unless its a Leicester or Boro story I hope any English club bar us get soundly beat.
