2nd best of a bad bunch sadly.

If you think Lindelof os better than Smalling at defending, then football is not for you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Out and out defending, no.

However, I think their styles complement each other quite nicely. Would make for a good partnership if they keep playing together.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you’d be happy for them to be our starting CB pairing for years to come?

Lindelof and Smalling I think is the best partnership we have out of our current crop, and playing together they may get better.

Thats not to say we shouldn't strengthen.

So who would you drop out of the 2 ?

That is totally dependent on who we sign. You need to grasp the concept of centre half partnerships and take into account who complements who the best.

I would say with him being 30 this year and the players picked around the same level he is, with Gomez also to come in, there isn't much hope for him having much of an international career left. The others are all younger, hungrier and have much more potential and in some cases, ie. Gomez, Stones and Maguire, better.

Yes but you would normally sign someone to compliment the better of your players.

At present Smalling is better than Lindelof. Neither are good enough to replicate our great CB pairings like Rio and Vid or Bruce and Pally.

Personally I think we need to ship out Rojo and/or Jones and bring in Alderweireld.

I think he would improve our defence but also adapt to suit the style of the other defenders we have.

there is no doubt Smalling is better than some of the defenders that have been picked. Can’t see I’m too disappointed as it keeps him fresh for us.
The biggest one for me is the omission of Wan Bisasaka yet he plays Trippier who is dreadful

I’d much prefer we sign someone to compliment Lindelof than Smalling. A truly commanding CB like a Vidic or Chiellini.

RDD

Given Smallings age that would be the more likely scenario.

Southgate Said early in his tenor as manager he did not want Smalling because he was not good with the ball at fit. To me I really could not care. If we are honest, Southgate is quite overrated and this fact will be clear in the next few months.

I certainly won't take any of the defenders he has there now over Smalling especially at the foolish prices that where paid for them.

I think this playing out from the back thing is over stated. It is nice if you have it, but I prefer a defender who can defend first and foremost.

At least Smalling gets given a reason for not being picked (although I disagree with it).

Connor Coady was told by Southgate last season that he wouldn't be picked whilst playing in the Championship. This season both Mason Mount and Jack Butland have been picked whilst playing in the Championship.

Coady and Bennett have been part of the fifth best defence in the Premier League, yet have to watch as players like Tarkowski get picked ahead of them. Pretty ridiculous really.

Bang on. It is the only reason why anyone would consider Lindelof to be better. A defender is there to defend first and foremost, everything else is a bonus. You look at VVD, he has shored up that Liverpool defence by stopping goals going in regularly.

Does this go for fullbacks as well ?

the best ones usually can do both, and I don't mean 50yard passes and dribbling past a few players, I mean just actually being able to have composure to pass it 10yards to a teammate instead of kicking it 50m into the sky when under any type of pressure

Yes. Defending is their main job still. But they are required to get forward a bit more than CB's so being useful with the ball is also required.

It is amazing how stupid this RDD clown is to be honest.

If a defender cannot defend, what are they doing on the pitch

He really is a clown. You only have to look at David Luiz; one game he plays like a class midfielder, the next game he looks like a league 1 defender. I'll take someone that can defend all day over that.

I agree, let defenders defend. I was just clarifying as iv seen lots on here say Shaw isnt good enough offensively, despite being very good defensively.
