Wasn't he a racist
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes racially abused and bullied Howard Gayle.

Took his frustrations out on Howard after Emlyn usurped him
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saw these quotes earlier. Pretty disgusting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The club sanctioned the abuse for years, no one gave him any support apart from Souness
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Elaborate anyone.

No idea of the background to this.

Just liked Tommy the footballer

In 1988, Smith caused controversy after stating in an interview with the author Dave Hill that Howard Gayle "suffered from a black man's attitude towards the white man. See, everybody thinks whites have an attitude towards blacks. In reality it's blacks who have a problem with the whites... I used to call Howard the 'White N*gger'. Now that is a compliment. It was the only way I could find to describe that I thought he was OK."

Smith then went on to comment to Hill that "I'm not prejudiced but if a c**n moved in next door, I'd move, like most white people would. If my daughter came home with a n*gger, I'd go mad. But I'm only being truthful and normal."

Smith intended to sue Hill, but found he had no grounds to take legal action as Hill had recorded all of Smith's comments on tape during the interview.

Just found that on Wikipedia, probably more stuff about it if you're curious

Sounds bad.

Of its day...and sad.

They say do not speak ill of the dead.

I still like Tommy the player.

You interview a muslim or Sikh or Hindu and get them to be honest ..I mean proper honest, and they will be Tommy in a different skin pigmentation or faith.

You ever read about muslim views in gay people

You read about black Oz and England rugby players on gay people this week.

You see muslim parents on lgbt lessons in Brum in 2019.

You see kids in jail in Pakistan today for blasphemy.

You see Chinese camps for muslim re-education.

Context

He said that stuff in a different era.

It was racist.

If you analyse what we say then and now, it has nuance...we had racist jam jars not long ago.

I think the point is we live in a world of prejudice wherever you want to look for it.

However its getting away from the point of the article, which was to pay respect to the passing of a great footballer in the history of Liverpool football club.

To get down to it....

Judge not that you be judged for what you said decades ago...before you read pc memo book.

You think it was normal to say you’d move if a c**n moved next door in 1988? Wow.

No, but there would not be the same condemnation level in 1988

This.

Respect is what the thread is about and remembering a footballer.

The key for issues like Racism is education. It is not an excuse, but it is a fact that education back in 1988 was non existent.

I do not agree with what he said.

If you want to start a fight do so, but not here on a thread when a guy has died.

Mate I agree, and I am not saying the dead, but it is only a short while back.

I knew this stuff was wrong and cannot defend what Tommy said.

I just think on his death we should respect that passing and his family.

If they read this....what would they think if we start a racist debate .

Being devil's advocate ..Respect Tommy Smith and not all of his views.

RIP

Have to agree I was at uni and living in Brixton then during the summer for building site work, and those views were not acceptable in the Chelsea shed, never mind among players.

Suarez...klanfield.

I was at a Liverpool v Chelsea game in the nineties and in bars afterwards locals were racist to black guys... saw that in the Chelsea potter bar on kings road too then.

Sure Everton are white was a chant until twenty years back.
