We already have some big players. Maybe we should buy 4/5 quality players instead.
If we were to spend big on one player then I'd say it should be on a world class centre forward. As we saw in 2012/13 a striker at the peak of their game can hide a multitude of sins.
I think Rashford is a terrific player but I don't think he's ready yet to lead the line for a title winning side. That may be an unpopular opinion but I'd like to see him tried again on the right but with licence to come infield into central areas as I think he'd be very dangerous in that role in an attacking system.

Not a bad shout but who is available - Icardi maybe but if we don't get CL at 29 would he want the move?
I can't think of any other real class forwards that are available. I'd rather keep Lukaku and get a proper RW and we have already been linked with a few.
We need to get a leader in CB, a RB if possible and a quality RW, with spending big on the RW as a priority. We also probably need a new CM if Herrera is already set on going elsewhere and we can use youth players as back up.

I honestly don't think he'd be that much of a square peg there if we played it right. When Mata plays there he comes infield a lot and at least with Rashford he'd also have the option, with his pace, of taking someone on out wide.
My response was to the OP anyway if we were to splash out on one big signing. I'd much prefer us to improve across the pitch in areas we need desperately to improve of course.

Compare our first XI versus previous successful United sides and we are miles off. Squad-wise, we're OK imo.
Sancho without a doubt, 19, English, quick, RW (of which they're not many) having an unbelievable season and at a selling club.
Based on what I've read about the club wanting to go back to our old transfer methodology of buying rising stars not yet at their peak or proven BPL players he'd suit us perfectly.
He'll be expensive, but he's exactly what we need. We desperately like options down the right and him, Rashford, Martial as a fluid front 3 would work well.

Yeah agree with this - what we need is the first 11 improving. RW has been a priority though for at least 4 years. Criminal that none of the previous managers have identified it tbh.
It'll be quite a process to rebuild up to where we want to be. This, I think, is a semi-realistic first XI for the start of next season that I'd be happy with:
De Gea
Meunier
Alderweireld
Lindelof
Shaw
Kroos
McT
Pogba
Rashford
Griezmann (if we're spending big he could be tempted)
Martial
Pace experience and energy in there with the likes of Dalot, Smalling, Bailly, Young. Lingard, Lukaku, Fred, Pereira and the youngsters in reserve.
There was talk of Dybala at Juve potentially becoming available, not sure if there is legs in that but he would be a better addition than Griezemann imo.
Agree with Alderweild though - we would be stupid att hat price not to be in for him. Not convinced Kroos is available either but I guess stranger things have happened.
It will probably take 2-3 transfer windows to sort the squad tbh, but we’ve tried to address problem areas over the past five years or so and keep getting it wrong for one reason or another.
I hope we go for young energetic, pacey players and ditch the “galactico” nonsense, it hasn’t worked. I still think we should be tapping up Hudson-Odoi and Declan Rice, possibly Wan-Bissaka too.
A reliable forward. Someone we can count on whilst Rashford and Martial have their inevitable barren spells that young players do.
People suggest Sancho but I dont think another youngster will solve many of our problems - he will give us those same spells of inconsistency that our current forwards too. Personally, i think if there is any chance of getting Griezmann we should be all over it.
Not opposed to getting an out and out winger at all, but more as a squad option, sort of what Liverpool did with Shaquiri last summer. Not too expensive and happy to spend time on the bench. Wouldn't mind someone like Deulofeu actually.

I like Dybala. He's a really good player from what I've seen. Not sure he'll be leaving Juve though. I've out Griezmann in there as a goalscorer we've been linked to in the past that could happen (even if not likely).
With Kroos I'm thinking Real will want to change their team about a bit and he may want a new challenge (similar to when Alonso left Real for Bayern).
I do agree with BruceandPally though in that I would like to see us build a team for the future but we also have to ensure we have enough for the here and now too. The team I've posted above has four experienced new signings but that goes with the relative youth of the players that are already at OT.
This summer and next season though I just want to see us headed in the right direction. There are surely players out there, not at elite clubs, who could improve us and it's up to our scouting network to come up trumps.
My team above is rather a lazy effort but was in keeping with the spirit of the article I thought.
Liverpool have Salah that plays RF/RW though - we don't have any options there at the minute and in the last few games seem to have given the spot to Dalot...
We desperately need a top RW in my view and if paper talk is that Juve want to sell Dybala to fund Joao Felix then we would be crazy not to see what he would cost.

Yeah I agree with the basic premise of your thinking Diafol, I was just pointing out whether any of those signings are available and whats the likelihood that we get them over say Real, or Barcelona that are also going to be in for some of the same players we are.
Kroos could be realistic as you might be right and RM under Zidane will want to change things up to compete in the league next season.
Dybala is an odd one as I would have said no way they will sell him for a 19 year old kid. Odd that he was the only one that played (and lost) in their game last week against SPAL from the first team and he wasn't rested for the game against Ajax. Maybe Ronaldo is raining on his parade a bit...

Sancho for the money he would cost wouldn't solve as many of our immediate problems as people think. Plus, I think the addition of a top attacking right back is just as, if not more important than an out and out winger. If we had one against Barca for example I think we win that game.

No worries. I get you.
It's always the case with signings about availability isn't it? What I do hope we do is target players in positions we require and not just buy them because they're available.
For the midfield Rabiot is another lazy one for me to throw in the mix!
The major thing for me over the summer as well is the conditioning of the players. We need to be fitter to carry out what Ole is trying to do. Get that one right and we'd be much improved IMO.

I guess I don't mean a RW in the traditional sense though - probably what we need is more a RF and there could potentially be some quality options available but it will be interesting to see whatt he big clubs around Europe all do in the transfer window.
I get why you look at a youngster like Sancho and question it for the cost though. I think if we got 3-4 experienced players in the 26-30 bracket we could be a much better team. Us the kids as backup and rotate the likes of Martial and Rashford and we could be impressive next season.
Alderweild would improve us immensely in defense immediately and potentially for a steal of a price as well.
Muenier wold be a good shout at RB with Dalot playing understudy.
Just RW/RF to sort out and there have been a few good shouts just on this thread.
If Herrera leaves we would also need a CM and someone that would do the sort of B2B role/sit deep when needed. We could then use McT, Matic, Fred in rotation.
Those changes alone would improve us immeasurably going into Ole's first full season. Get the fitness of the existing players up and a good pre-season and I think we might challenge.

Totally agreed and typed the same thing before I saw your comment re fitness of the players.
I guess if we get Bale we know that Ed hasn't learned any lessons!!
I've mentioned him before (!) but I wouldn't be against signing Daniel James of Swansea either. Pacy forward, can play on the right, wouldn't expect initially to play every game. Always a risk with the step up of course but I think he has the tools to be a top player. Would be a much, much cheaper option than Sancho too and much easier to sign I'd imagine.

Sancho for the money he would cost wouldn't solve as many of our immediate problems as people think. Plus, I think the addition of a top attacking right back is just as, if not more important than an out and out winger. If we had one against Barca for example I think we win that game.

Also, I dont think Dybala is an out and out RW from what I've seen? Sort of operates in similar positions to Griezmann.
Wouldn't say no to either one tbh.

No worries.

If we got someone with that experience as well for him to play understudy to for a couple of years then yes. Just think we need some players with high level experience for the first 11.

Ashley Young could play there until he's ready...
