neither was john o'shea some would have you believe, or fletcher, or park, but all won major honours.

is he good enough to be a regular? no probably not.
is he good enough to be a squad player, of course.

and if you think its because of players like him which are the reason we are where we are, then maybe football isnt for you

He has purple patches and does a job when needed.

When you realise he's nearly 27 though, its not about potential anymore. I think he's as good as he'll get now.

Yeah I don't get the Lingard hate, used to be Carrick...

Anyway he is a decent player to have and he is happy to be on the bench. Good squad player and clearly loves the club. You can never fault his effort so I don't see why we should get rid of him. Much more important players to move on imo - Sanchez for one.

The inconsistency is a problem and a valid criticism. On the other hand, in most of the best matches I can think of since Ole took the wheel Lingard has both played and performed well.

He's not a player who can regularly step up and take the game by the scruff of the neck. I see him more as a cog in a machine - and one whose telling contributions come when he's in the right kind of machine. His movement and awareness are a big asset when there's a lot of energy and movement around him. When the formation or the personnel don't suit that, his contribution is diminished.

I'd see him at least as a squad player for the future. No one will complain if a better alternative takes his place as a starter. But if he's losing his place, I'd want to see his replacement also supplying that work-rate and intelligent movement.

So take away the Cardiff game, ole’s first. He has 2 goals and 2 assists in the league, and that’s good enough from a forward at a club where we want to be challenging on all fronts?

Maybe footballs not for you if you think it is.

Definitely good enough as a squad player, perhaps not a first choice but has a part to play for us. I would t sell.

so all you look for are goals and assists?

what about his pressing play or his ability to make space for others around him with his movement?

like i say, probably not good enough as a starter but more than good enough as a squad player

Not all I look at no, but as said in the original post. End product isn’t good enough.

He is to us what Bernardo silva is to city, and Bernardo is streets ahead in every department. We need better players than lingard.

Lingard's form has not been at all good since he went off injured in the Liverpool game. He also came back too soon and broke down, which probably didn't help. Agree he was very poor yesterday.

However, in first dozen games, Lingard was one of our better players. Great movement off the ball stretching defences. He's also scored some tremendous goals for us over the past few years - and goals at important stages. Finally, let's not forget the brilliant world cup he had.

Lingard just doesn't do enough to be a starter for us. There are far to many games where he goes missing.

Saturday was another.

I'm with all the others OP; Plenty to sell before him. He's a good squad player, works hard, has quite a few good games under his belt, like most he needs others around him to be performing. No he's not going to be a star, be a game changer, but not all eleven can be that.

posted on 15/4/19

Maybe have a think about the quality of our performances and the kind of football we were playing under Ole before Lingard got injured.

Then think about the quality of our performances and the kind of football we've been playing since.

Yep, though about it and it still doesn't change the fact that he goes missing in way too many games.

no end product
-------------------
He had some good end product when scoring the winner in the FA cup final... That's one of quite a few big game performances he's had.

He's a great squad player and the absolute bottom of the list of players that need shipping out.

If we want to be competitive, we need players who love the club and will give their all, while not complaining if benched.

No doubt the OP was also on McT's back just a few weeks ago.

People talk about "not being a Man Utd player" with seemingly no idea of our history.

I think they understand our history perfectly but are just frustrated by Lingard.

It is still hard to determine exactly what his best position is.

I rate him as a good squad player. He's the sort of player Fergie filled his squads with. Home grown, works hard, loves the club, will play any role asked of him and, at times, he can produce a big moment. The real problems with the squad and first team lay elsewhere.

Lingard was getting nothing but love until the injury. Now the plastic patrol is turning on him again, because he hasn't returned in form. F*ck off the lot of you. It's disgusting how quick some of you turn on your own.

This.

He's not even fully fit yet ffs.

I think the vast majority of comments on Lingard are the right ones

He’s a good squad player who I personally would never sigh if I saw him in the starting line up but we probably need someone better and more consistent on the right side of the striker on a regular basis.
