A must win or our season is over

posted on 17/4/19

Brighton have completely fallen apart in recent games, and they haven't scored in any of their last 5 matches. They were 15th with a game in hand a month ago but now have only 2 points to spare from a relegation position. And losing 5-0 to Bournemouth then 2-0 to Cardiff in home games this week they are truly in the mire.

Their remaining games are against Newcastle at home and away games at Wolves, Spurs and Arsenal. Might not be many points in those games for them and then they have the nightmare game on the last day of the season at home to Man City.

Important game for Wolves to win on Saturday, but a desperate game for Brighton and they will be sure to want to make it as difficult as possible for us.

Don't suppose he's as fast as Traore yet but I reckon he wouldn't fall over so often over his usual 15 minutes.

That is a lovely clip with Traore and the young kid, I do not disagree entirely with the criticism on ‘ere about him, but the guy does have a lot of talent, I watched him pretty close up second half at Southampton and he got to the byeline out of nothing several times and it was not his fault the crosses could not be converted he did well to get the ball over

We can say Wolves have beaten 2 of the Champions League semifinalists !

In pre season we also drew with Ajax and we also drew with Betis who have beaten Barca this season and beat Villareal who have drawn with Barca this season so we are by default champions

Agree with the comments about Traoré I think he is given a hard time by some fans. He has been making a much more positive impact from the bench than Cavaleiro or Costa in recent months and is close to being very good. Don’t think any defender would relish playing against him and did read this week that relative to his playing time he has had more successful dribbles than any player in the Premier League this season. In fact close to double the second highest who is Eden Hazard. He hasn’t yet converted that to end product as he was doing at Boro but surely worth persevering with for another season

A stat on dribbles means almost nothing if there is no end product. I'm sure that every oppo team would be delighted to let him dribble all around the pitch and beat every man 15 times for 88 minutes every game after they've scored.

I think he has scored one and assisted one so far, may be wrong. Mind you that is better than Costa who, for me, is a much greater disappointment.

if anything i think traore hasn't been used enough.
with teams like udders who park the bus our counter attack game isn't as effective., a player who runs at them can destabilise a comfortable defence. if my memory is correct he was never brought on at udders away - should have been on at half-time imo

I think the fact that teams double up on Traore shows that they do see him as a threat. Our biggest problem when he is on the pitch is that we use him as our only outlet rather than making the most of the space he can create.

Sometimes, against the lesser sides I think he is a really good option if played out wide.

Much as he has been a flop I do agree with you regarding his usage and in what systems he gets his chances. Sometimes he has no chance to make an impact.

Problem is though that for 18 million he has to deliver more regardless.

As Wulfrun says though, Costa has been the bigger let down by far and I fear for his future as a player if his confidence is as fragile as it appears, he has looked way out of his depth.

Cavaleiro has slowly gotten worse as the season has gone on as well and looks like one of those players that needs plenty of playing time to maintain form and that isn't gonna happen here.

If we got a good offer for Traore I would take it and it's a no brainer that we move on Costa and Cavaleiro.

In less than an hour, West Brom U23's kick off against Southampton U23's. We need the baggies to take the points, as that will keep us top with 1 game to go each.

If we win at Man Utd U23's Friday week, we get promoted.

Touching on the points made above, dribbling and possession stats mean naff all. At the end of the day, it's whether or not you can get the ball in your opponents net more times than they can get it in yours.

18m quid should have seen a better return than what he's done thus far. He's had more than enough chances in my book, so if offers come in for him, get rid.

One of the cliches that gets spouted when things aren’t going well is that the team doesn’t have a plan b. For that reason I wouldn’t advocate getting rid of all three of Traoré, Costa and Cavaleiro cause they do give us an option to change from the usual formation. And as we only have a small squad now then reducing that number would mean us needing to add quite a few in the summer to get to a more sensible squad size of at least 20

As for wolfies naive point I don’t think any team would score many goals if they didn’t see the benefit of passing, possession, dribbling etc to get into positions to score. Or is he advocating hoof Ball?

On this day in 2014 we best Rotherham 6-4. That was quite a game

Troy Deeney has lost his appeal against his red card against Arsenal so will definitely miss the game against Wolves

DJ, I never mentioned passing and as usual you make a mountain out of a mole hill. Stats mean nothing at all and as the dribbling was reference to Traore, I need say no more.

Southampton U23's got a 1-1 draw at WBA which leaves 3 teams on the same points with one to go. We win that last one and we not only stay top, but get promoted.

I was always told passing stats mean nothing so presumably dribbling stats mean far less.

We need a big upgrade in that area to progress and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us add two players to that area this summer which will leave two of ours basically without a job.

Costa has to go for sure and I don't see Cavaleiro getting games next season assuming we upgrade. No problem giving Traore another season though I don't see it ever working for him here.

The problem with Traore is that Nuno either plays him centrally which doesn't suit him at all or as a wing back to replace Doherty. For all his speed and trickery, he is nowhere near as effective as Doc and as a defender he is quite frankly rubbish.
Traore is a winger, full stop. On the one occasion I remember him playing wide with Doc still on the field (can't remember the actual game) Doc kept overlapping with him and taking up Adama's dribbling space so they just get in each other's way.
I agree that he is an option to change things - plan B if you like - but to accommodate him we have to revert back to 3 at the front and probably also go with a flat back 4.
Maybe something like this could work?

Patricio
Bennett Coady Saiss Boly
Moutinho Dendoncker Neves
Traore Jimenez Jota
