Another good argument is that it seems to stop players surrounding the referee and screaming abuse at him for 2 to 3 minutes

Against Real Madrid Nani was deservedly sent off, for high feet/dangerous play , I think var would still have ended up with us with 10 men.

I'm still against VAR, even though it helped us out last night.

That's one interpretation of what happened - it certainly isn't mine.

That decision was shambolic in my view.

There was nothing malicious in intend, but I think it was still a dangerous if somewhat accidental incident, so a red.

Op, on var , I agree on your points, it’s certainly added drama..

I think it was a foul, a yellow as it was Nanis first foul of the game. The ball was arriving from the air or had bounce up high so nani naturally stuck up his leg to try and retrieve it, unfortunately he unintentionally hit a players waist. For me never a red. Upto that point we were playing better than Madrid but that decision changed the whole dynamic of the game

im all for var

regards to the spurs goal, yes it hit his elbow(not deliberate)1 angle showed it then onto his hip into the goal, the rules are you cant score direct from the use of the arm/hand but the final touch was of his hip

the offside one was clear and obvious so not even up for debate even though those last minute celebrations now will have to be a bit more careful

It was dangerous, I agree, but that doesn't mean it was worthy of a red.

Well, either way it doesn’t matter now..

Var is the way ahead.

I'm sure in that 'Nani' match the Real keeper caught one of our players (Vidic?) at least once with a punch to the head whilst going for the ball. Not saying that was intentional but equally, if not more, dangerous IMO.

Was the Nani red the one where he was controlling the ball? Harsh red, especially when the rules were slightly more lenient

He was just unlucky the defender was running full pelt the other way.

The biggest issue with VAR is whether the officials can be trusted to use it properly.

They seem to have a totally different interpretation of the laws than anyone else.

Overall it is probably a good thing but the handball incidents, as an example, are proving to be a complete farce. Clear and obvious my backside - total contradiction from the guidance issued last Spring.

Funnily enough it doesnt stop players whinging at the ref, even goal line technology didnt stop that, ive seen players argue with the ref on goals cleared off the line only for the ref to point at his watch and say goal line technology you mug that usually ended the whinging there and then.

I think its more the surrounding of the ref issue, yes you get the odd player trying to moan after a goal line decision and then the ref just points at the watch and it stops there and then doesn't really carry on

Ugh I've just agreed with Winston ffs

You're the second Liverpool fan who has expressed disgust about that today.

We probably agree on more than you realise.

VAR at the end of it all is just a tool to help referees, and if used competently it will do that very well. Problem is, as seen in the cups the referees in our league are anything but competent at their job and even with the help of technology they have still facked it up on more than one occasion which is probably the main reason it wasn't voted in for this season.

Our refs will be sheitting themselves over VAR lets be honest, they will no doubt deep down know as good as a tool it can be for them it will just as easily highlight even more so, how clueless they are when it comes to interpreting and implementing the laws/rules they are employed to apply.

It definitely needs to be sped up either way, all the standing about waiting on the VAR and taking too long to make a decision is taking something away from the 'moment' in my opinion.

The offside in the City v Spurs game was a good call and it's fine when it's as clear cut as that. The problem is when it comes down to interpretation, watching it back again in slow motion removes the context of something like a handball or a red card.

posted on 18/4/19

Also, Man City's almost "winner" last night didn't need VAR. If the linesman just flagged for offside you don't need to let them go on and score, that's just fecking annoying.

I disagree actually - in the FA Cup I think it's shown our referees seem to have a good deal more common sense than their European counterparts.

The Nani decision was ridiculous. It was high but completely unsighted and while there was contact, the speed and direction of his movement meant there wasn't dangerous force. I remember Nani was down for a while before the ref showed the red card, and it didn't occur to me there was a danger he'd be sent off when he got up. The commentators didn't suggest any peril either.

...Whereas in the away leg they should have had a red card when we were in for a one-on-one and their defender took one for the team. Only in the event he didn't have to take one.

I agree for objective things like offside, it can only be good.

I often hear of fans saying that refs/linesman might not have the 'balls' to give a decision in a certain situation, for example, away at Old Trafford, or even Sterling's last minute 'goal' last night. I even see fans praising refs for having the 'balls' to give a decision in these situations when they correctly do so, for example, say it's Man Utd vs Huddersfield. If Pogba went in two footed on someone in the 2nd minute, is the ref more likely to let him off with a yellow than if it was a Huddersfield player going in two footed on Pogba? Probably, and that's not right.

What VAR did last night was take away that feeling for the linesman. Say Aguero had been marginally onside and the linesman had flagged for offside. City fans would probably be sending him death threats. But because of VAR, he can keep his flag down, and let it be reviewed if the goal goes in, which is exactly what happened. Only good in my opinion.
