In Belgium the title is decided by a similar play off rule so could be worse
How often does 6th place actually go up though? Huddersfield did but for the most part a team quite close to the automatics get the job done especially in the Championship.
I think a better system would be what they have in Scotland where 18th takes on 3rd in a play off, maybe 17th and 4th aswell.
Playoffs were started to make money for FL and sponsors, it's purely about money, the fairest would be top 2 championship play bottom 2 Premier league
Saw something mentioned earlier about the Play-off system in Italy's Serie B.
If the 3rd place team finished x points (can't remember how many) infront of the next place team, then the play-offs are cancelled and that team goes up automatically.
Seems a bit fairer.
It is fair because the rules are known before the competition starts.
It is definitely harsh though. Leeds and Sheffield United will probably be fighting til the end for 2nd, and the team who ends 3rd has to go again in the play offs. On the other hand, WBA and Villa can cruise to the end of the season, rest key players and manage injuries to prepare for thd play offs.
However evidence is that the team finishing 3rd wins promotion more often than the rest. 5th is more successful than 4th, while the team finishing 6th is least likely.
It's not the fairest way of doing things as third place deserves it more. But it makes the championship far more interesting and keeps many team's season going. If it was pure top 3 the season would now be over and there would be no interest in that league
Play offs are completely unfair, lots of 6th place clubs have come up, I think West Ham did. It is purely a money making business.
Same goes for all the divisions, teams that are like 15-20 points sometimes off 3rd, often get promoted.
Am I right in thinking that the team that wins the Championship playoff final gets a huge amount of money in comparison to the actual winner of the league?

Depends what you mean, really? Prize money is actually distributed equally among all teams, so top gets the same as bottom. There is no prize money for winning the play off.
However, there will be extra income from the play offs through gate receipts and TV money for the play offs.
It would only be unfair if it was introduced during the season. All the teams know the deal when they kick off in August.
It's the same as champions league qualification. Really the teams that finish 2nd to 4th shouldn't qualify, but then money talks.

Yeah, so I believe that the playoff journey for the winner combined with the money to where you finished (3rd-6th) ends up making you the biggest earner compared to 1st or 2nd.
Nothing better than the playoffs at the end of the season.

Yeh I reckon the Prem should be like in Rugby, where the top four play off to see who the real champions are.
18, 19, 20 relegated as is
1, 2, 3 promoted outright
Play off between the team finishing 17th in the PL and 4th in the Championship. Could even make it a mini tournament between 4, 5 and 6 if you want to keep top 6 as a thing.

The drama, excitement.
Love watching them.
Unfair in my eyes but its good business and a money spinner which seems to be far more important than fairness in the football world nowadays

I like this concept!
17th in the prem would be too strong for 4th in the Championship 99% of the time, no?
There was a time in 1988 where 17th in the top division which was Chelsea played 4th in division 2 which was Middlesbrough.
Chelsea ended up going down for finishing 17th that season.A 2 legged affair with Boro winning the 1st leg 2-0.Chelsea won the return 1-0 but not quite enough.
This was followed by mass rioting . The 17th v 4th system was amended after that to the current system we have now.
