This is pretty much what comes with EL football and it's why no one wants it. Can absolutely wreck a league season.
Putting it into perspective, you guys had played 2 away games in midweek and were bound to struggle here - said as much before the game. Palace are a dangerous team to play at the best of times.
I think if we take points off Chelsea you'll get top 4.
A win today would have meant we could have even possible afforded 1 away loss to wolves, Leicester or burnley.
Top 4 in the league for me is gone now

That would still require us to beat Wolves and Leicester away. Which would be a tough task. Had we won today, it would have given us an important cushion incase we slip up against any of those teams. Now this has ratcheted up the pressure. Fack Emery!
Calm down ffs we can’t win every game especially after that epic away game against Naples seriously get a life and support El neny and Mustafi it’s all we got nothing can change that... even if you commit suicide please don’t though and accept we are lucky to be where we’re and if we make top four well done Emery at least we ain’t sheet like United
Sheriff, you keep saying 'fack Emery', but you are essentially admitting in your article that, compared to where you expected us to be at the start of the season, we are doing better than you anticipated.
He's made some extremely controversial and befuddling decisions at times, but the fact remains, we had been in the top 4 hunt for ages, whilst reaching the Europa League semi-finals.
Unfortunately, the limitations of these players will rear their ugly heads at the worst times because there is only so much you can do with a group of players that lack quality. And we have played a lot of games in a short space of time. Having looked at our fixture list, sadly this will continue to be the case until the end of the season. So rotation will be necessary heading into the final 8/9 matches.
I'm not sure if we will get top 4 anymore, and I don't want this to be a tepid end to the season. But Emery's done a better job than most us thought he would.

He’s either having a laugh or just emotional wreck he needs to thank Emery every day not criticising him for one loss.
Days like today are in a way why you celebrated finishing top four all those times, such as the last game at Highbury, the final day at St James' Park a few years ago etc.
Europa League football is just a horrible competition. The CL place for the winner nowadays makes it slightly more attractive but it still always badly affects a league campaign.
The ref was also to blame, we were denied a stonewall penalty. But the OP clearly has issues with Emery and is still deeply absorbed in his Wenger-love.

Saying a manager did well to get us to this point and then wrecked our chances are not mutually exclusive. If you found his decisions "befuddling" as you have said yourself too, then the criticism for facking it up is deserved. We all knew what was coming when we saw that starting teamsheet. That is on Emery and no one else. He wrecked our chances today. Sorry, but I'm sick and tired of watching him make his ridiculous team selections and then have to remedy his glaring errors that everyone could already see in the 2nd half.
And today wasn't a simple matter of rotation. Else, Torreira on the bench made zero sense after missing 3 games with suspension (which seemed like forever) and getting hooked off at half-time against Watford. Why was Torreira on the bench while Elneny and Gwen stank up the place. WTF was the point? Why were we playing 3 CBs at home against facking Palace?

Maybe I'm clutching at straws here, but he hasn't entirely facked it up yet. We are still in with a shout. It just means we will have to show the resilience and mental fortitude that we showed against Napoli in the games against Wolves and Leicester. Thankfully, Sokratis will be back and we won't have to rely on Mustafi. Hopefully ever again.
Chelsea also have to play United at Old Trafford, which could be critical, especially as they haven't won against a top 6 side away from home this season.
Torreira had a groin injury against Napoli and apparently had a minor injury against Watford on Monday, too. Reports originally said that he wasn't even going to be risked today, so I was surprised to see him on the bench. I don't think Emery wanted to use him, but as the game went on, it seemed like he had little other choice because Elneny was absolutely useless.
I still think we will get top 4. Maybe I’ll have egg on my face but I still think Chelsea will have at least one more dreadful result under Sarri that will cost them. United are also in free fall and hopefully will lose to City which should all but end our charge.
It is still extremely annoying because we will now have to do things the hard way and will probably have to take at least 10 points from our remaining games. Emery sabotaged us with that team selection yesterday. Elneny and Gwen is a CM pairing that should and probably will never happen again but Emery should have known that before the match. Also thinking Jenkinson/Mustafi was the ideal combination to stop Zaha. Worst of all we’ve defended set pieces well all season and Palace scored 2 of their easiest set piece goals of the season against us. 4 if you include the free pens they got at Selhurst Park.
I’m hoping this result ends any lingering doubt in Emery’s mind that some of these players cant be trusted. Mustafi is the first one who has to be shown the door.
