Fergie was absolutely spot on that he wouldn't reach his peak until around this age, but he never said (nor would he ever know) just how good his peak would be. It's clearly a long way off where we need to be in terms of starters, although I'm sure he'd keep him in the squad if he were currently rebuilding us. He shouldn't be an option first choice, in any position.

There are probably 10 wingers in the bottom half of the league better than Lingard
While it is absolutely up to the players to “step up to the plate” and all that, you could say that Lingard is unlucky to have come into such an average United team/era. The Kanchelskis and Nani comparisons are slightly misleading for that reason.
It’s true that he hasn’t made any position his own or really established an identity for himself as a player; it’s equally true that we’ve had no consistently effective style or formation while he’s been in the squad. We still don’t know if Martial would be a better 9 than LW, or than Rashford, for similar reasons. Or where/how to fit Pogba etc...
I’ve always maintained that Lingard is a great player to have in the squad. Can play in a few positions and is capable of the odd moment of magic. Yes, his major weakness is his tendency to be completely anonymous, but not one attacking player has really stood out long-term since Ferguson left.
As for the Sterling comparison - I don’t know how well Lingard would do in Pep’s City side, but I bet Sterling would struggle and look lost for United as he has so often for England.
As was said on here yesterday, Lingard is a long, long way down our list of problems to solve.
At the same time people are complaining about commitment, work rate, and playing for the badge, they're talking about shipping Lingard and McTominay out before the likes of Martial.

I'm here, VC.
Go back to three/four months ago and look at the comments people were posting about Lingard and Rashford after Ole's first few games.
When we were employing a possession-based approach, using a three man midfield/diamond and on the front foot pressing in the opposition's defensive third, people were saying how good the pair of them looked and how they were both important parts of the future under Ole.
Now we're back to ceding the midfield, standing off and trying to counter from deep, a whole bunch of the players - including Jesse and Rashford - look poor, as they did when we played that way under Jose.
In both players' cases (and this hasn't been as public with Rashford as it has with Lingard, but you only need to look at his pace) you can also consider their recent injuries and fact they aren't fully fit.
In the last couple of weeks I've been frankly amazed that people haven't been on the backs of Ole and the coaching staff. They've made some terrible tactical decisions, which have led to some disaster ours performances.
I'm not trying to take the blame entirely off the players, but from the first five minutes of the Everton game, for example, it was patently obvious that they'd got the setup all wrong. Several people including MUDD and myself were up in arms on the match thread. It was a disastrous approach and those kind of mistakes aren't helping the players at all.

I'm not saying that Lingard is going to evolve into some kind of goalscoring or creating machine. But we have to be very careful about shipping out those few players we have who give 100% for the club every single game and every single day when I think we've all recognised to a man that one of the biggest issues we have at the whole club is with a squad of laissez-faire players that doesn't really care whether we win or lose games.

All them players you just mentioned offer something. Even Henderson who i don't rate. Lingard is very very weak on the ball, poor passing, can't hold up, can't score, can't create. I am sorry but we also need to be ruthless rather than keep players because they have passion or care. Hasn't done us any favours with Young and Jones and won't work with Lingard. Nathan Redmond is better than lingard.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are probably 10 wingers in the bottom half of the league better than Lingard
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep.
Gray, Felipe Anderson, Lanzini, Yarmolenko, Townsend, Zaha, Redmond, Sessegnon, Jahanbakhsh, Schurrle
Lingard is in the tier of Albrighton, Snodgrass, Antonio, Kenedy, Ibe, Brady, Elyounoussi, Izquierdo, Babel
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How many of those players perform the same role Lingard is sent out to?
He isn't a winger, and he doesn't play as one. He's exclusively used as an inside forward (predominantly), attacking midfielder or number ten.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Inside forward...they are supposed to score and create. He does neither.

At the same time people are complaining about commitment, work rate, and playing for the badge, they're talking about shipping Lingard and McTominay out before the likes of Martial.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We need more than just commitment. Jesus anyone can show that. Martial yes needs a rocket up his backside but at least we know he has ability
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you believe he gives a fack about Manchester United?
What do you think would happen if we had shot of the likes of Young, Rashford, Lingard, McTominay, Smalling and Jones, as many people are advocating, and replaced them with a bunch of more technically gifted players with Martial's on-pitch attitude?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So lets keep with a player who does give a sheite but offers feck all on the pitch then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How technically gifted do you think Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner and Lallana are?
What do they all have in common?

He is simply not good enough even as a squad player. End of
