I agree but then we have seen calls from some United fans to spend 90m on a defender already this morning
I don’t think you should completely ignore big marquee signings, but only look for ones who genuinely want to join the club and fit into what we want to achieve.
the thing for me is a huge amount of signings made by the club in recent years that turned out to be flops were actually applauded by fans on here and in general.
Schneiderlin, depay, Di Maria, pogba, were all seen as good signings at the time, maybe a little over prices but all players who could be seen as being able to take the club forward.. hindsight is a wonderful thing
The priority must be to bring in young, hungry players that are motivated by glory more than money. We could also do with some experienced leaders in there to help them develop. This is why I feel that Ole is a good choice for the managers role right now. The chances are that this approach will mean that we aren't going to be able to compete for the title for a few seasons. Not many managers would be happy to take this long term approach. Ole cares about the club and will sacrifice his own personal glory for the good of the club long term. It could be that when Ole leaves the club he hasn't been a success in terms of trophies, yet has laid a solid foundation for the manager that follows him. It is going to be a very interesting summer and I strongly believe that we will see full promotion of 5 of the youngsters, 3 or 4 signings of younger players and perhaps 2 more experienced players.

This is true; but hopefully we've all learned something from the signings of Depay and Pogba, in particular, because those two had and have something very obvious in common.
I don't have a problem with self-confidence in a footballer, but when ego > work rate, on the playing field and on the training ground, you have a problem.
Ronaldo and Cantona had momentous egos. But they backed them up by demonstrating commitment, determination and graft before and during games.

Even Lukaku.
This marquee signing thing, if Ole thinks that a player who is valued at £100m is the player he wants and will fit into his way of playing at Utd we should pay it, the same goes for a player at £15/£20m.

Exectly. What is important is to build a balanced and hungry squad. If there is a gap in experience, position or skill, and the only way to fix it is a Marquee signing, then it has to be done.
Gotta say O.P, I totally agree.
Once SAF and Gil stepped down, I was getting all the banter, and I said, well, what UTD can do is buy their way out of the problem while they work on a good plan for the future.
What is becoming clear as the seasons go by, is that Ed and the Glazers dont have a proper plan in place. I can understand being caught out in 2013, but we in 2019..fack it. Decade is done. It’s almost 2020.
The appointment of Ole, looks again like a knee jerk, when they didn’t have to give him the job then.
Why go back on the advantage you gave yourself.
Only had to wait just over 2 months. We are fans for a reason, and sometimes emotions get the best of us.
You a business man. Yet all I can see is lack of foresight for what’s needed on the pitch.
In less than a decade, the drop off from Top 3 in the world, to this is astonishing.
But, we will be fine. I parralel this situation with Disney/Star Wars.
Things haven’t gone smoothly, like, announcing Rian Johnson as director for next Trilogy before his film came out. Now it’s gone quiet.
So ok, Disney says, let’s take a break and plan the next 10 years. Good stuff.
But then, GOT S8 getting mixed reaction.
But Disney have already announced the GOT writers as the directors of the next trilogy!
Awkward.
Just like us with Ole... it’s awkward now.
I wish him all the best, he’s here now. I’m 100 behind him. Just make sure you back him and support him Ed.
But build from young hungry talent, who want to die for the shirt is what’s needed now.
The fans will be patient and back it if they see a logically plan being implemented.
If we are to go for a marquee signing, then it should be the type that have something to prove, but obviously still got it.
Otherwise we need skilful players, who come for the honour and genuinely wants to be a part of this project.
