Van Aanholt :

Anyone who can’t be happy for Liverpool right now are not fans of football. Tonight was a write off and against all odds they just showed the world what the Premier League is about.

He's entitled to his opinion.

Personally I think PVA is a far better fullback than Shaw. He's very good going forwards which I feel Shaw is truly awful at. Their goals and assists stats speak volumes too and Shaw plays in a better team too.

It wouldn't be a terrible idea to have more offensive and defensive options in both positions.

He's a defensive liability though. As competition he might be good though.

As Dalot currently is at RB.

Shouldn't matter as much in some games though. Shaw and Van Aanholt on the left and AWB and Dalot on the right would have some balance about it.

Dalot at 19/20 years old so has a lot of scope to improve. He may even end up paying further forward. How old is PVA now? 28? 29?

Definitely. Against the cannon fodder we'd be much better with PVA for example.

Shaw is pretty reliable defensively usually but his attacking game leaves a lot to be desired.

Agreed.
He's been defensively awful for long spells this season.

Not a bad deal, Van Aanholt can be a squad player

posted on 16/5/19

PVA is atrocious defensively.

posted on 16/5/19

I don’t think Crystal Palace would sell one of them let alone both, also with Zaha maybe leaving they won’t want to lose too many of their best players.

PVA could really help bond our defence together imo.

Van Aanholt surprises me.

Tierney at Celtic would be available around 20m i suspect, he's a much better option at LB.

50m plus young, Smalling and Jones. We should do that
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Jones yes, Smalling, fk that. He is the best defender we have

Rather take a punt on him as competition for Shaw than PVA.

Tierney would have Shaw on the bench every game imo.

PVA would be a better fit for us in most PL games when we need to break sides down. Shaw may be a better defender with PVA being a bit ropey but the number of times we have Shaw in good positions against sides further down the table and he just cannot do anything productive, PVA would make a huge difference.

Ideally we'd just find 2 fullbacks the right age that can become first teamers from the off.

So what you're saying Mike is we're better of getting Tierney.

Agree with this.
If we are defo after a lb then tierney would be a superb choice. Him and WB on each flank would be a big upgrade..

Has anyone signed that Grimaldo from Benfica? He was brilliant against us the other year, such a nuisance bombing forward.

"Truly awful going forward" is unfair. He's better defensively than in attack but his overlaps, his movement and his passing choices as we attack down the left have been a lot better this year. And he throws in the occasional outstanding defence-splitting pass. Don't forget that abysmal finishing is one reason his attacking statistics don't look better. We shouldn't overlook the inconsistency of our left-sided attackers and e.g. Martial's poor movement in Shaw's attacking performance either.

Not sure this is that true. Look at his career stats, you’ll see a pattern.

He’s improved this season, but we could do better..
