Most stats in football are meaningless, most chat about football is bollox. Doesn't stop it filling part of the day.
That said, Assists are important however, as they count towards my FF team.
I haven't played to a decent level or anything but have played and now retired to a 6aside league...
While the assist stats can be flawed it’s usually the same players who top the assist charts so it’s not totally irrelevant.

I saw next to vvd recently a new stat of not being dribbled past, when did that get made up?
What do you mean it shouldn't be a stat?
So it shouldn't be a stat because if you play with better players you are likely to get more assist? Does that not work the same with goals?
As you've also said by saying someone could dribble past half a team and set someone up or blast a "nothing" ball and then the team scores. Does it matter how they are given?
So you are allowed to say Salah, Aubameyang, Mane, Aguero etc are good strikers because they score goals but not allowed to say that someone like Hazard, Eriksen etc are good because they've got assists?
Article is a farce.
own goals shouldn't be allowed, if your team don't score it it shouldn't count!

I'm not saying it because it's Morespurs and generally he is a bell, I'm saying it because he genuinely is in the bottom 5 people on this entire site in terms of knowing the game, understanding the game and getting things wrong. He may have played for his schools third 11 when the paraplegic forgot his kit and they needed someone to make 11.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably would run rings around you and you wouldn't get sniff of the ball
An assist is completely and utterly dependant of another player putting the ball in the net, it completely depends on what someone else does after your pass, and your pass could be the most delicious pass ever seen or the most flukiest worst first touch of a ball that deflects to your team mate who puts it in the net. Completely meaningless!!!!
Just because the stat needs context, and such doesn’t give a completely accurate review of the player’s worth in a creative sense, doesn’t render it meaningless.
A goal works exactly the same way though.
You could tackle the opponent, beat 10 players and then score from 35 yards or the keeper may belt it off their own defender and the striker taps in from 5 yards. All counts for the same.
We shpuld do away with clean sheets bar penalties because the goalkeeper has players in from of him trying to stop goals.
People try and convince others that players are better than other players because of stats, and assists is one that comes up time and time again, Ashley Westwood has 7 assists this season, Mo Salah has 8, they're basically on the same level then surely....!!!
We should do away with possession, after all it doesn’t reveal what the team does with possession. Meaningless stat! I want a stat that gives me every single detail and context behind it when presented with a figure. That makes perfect sense
I think it is more that people use such stats to separate two players of similar abilities.
"I mean you literally see people go on about goals and assists to prove how good or how bad a player is, goals yeah fair enough, but leave the assists out..."
Did you see this part of the article?
So you're allowed to say x is better than y because x has scored more goals. But you aren't allowed to say y is better than z because y has more assists?
Not that you'd ever use that as a true indicator but in principle, is that what you're saying.

If you are comparing strikers who play for similar level teams I think the amount of goals scored is a good way of telling who the better striker may be yeah...
So by your logic, Vardy is better than Wilson because they both play for clubs of similar quality and Vardy has scored more goals.
But goals scored are without context. A striker could only score tap ins in a really creative team but score two more tap ins than a guy with a far larger repertoire of goals in a struggling side.
Therefore, goal scoring stats are meaningless.

Well this is my point, comparing Vardy and Wilson is difficult because they have different roles within their respective sides.
Wilson likes to link up with usually King. Probably why he has 9 assists this season and has been involved directly in 23 goals.
Vardy is your classic run in behind, fox in the box (no pun intended), press the opposition etc. He has only been directly involved in 22 goals for his side though because he doesn't link up as well as what Wilson does. Evidenced also by Puel who didn't utilise Vardy to his biggest strength whereas Rodgers has.
So you can't really compare Wilson to Vardy and say that Vardy is better because it all comes down to what you want from a striker. Do you want somebody who will run in behind, or somebody who can link well with other players etc. Other teams like having a target man because of how they play, like Burnley. Ashley Barnes has 12 goals to his name and Wilson has 14, you'd say similar quality judging just off goals but you couldn't put Barnes in Bournemouth's team and vice versa. The OP doesn't get this.

In that case I would say Vardy is in better form rather than needing to compare the two players out right
So Vardy has had the better season because he's scored more goals than Wilson even though he hasn't been directly involved in as many as Wilson.
