According to McCann Marko wanted more than the club was prepared to offer. No idea whether the money offered was reasonable or otherwise. Said to have shook hands!

The question of Marosi vs Lawlor is a difficult one. Marosi effectively had no competition once Lawlor got injured, but as time went on he did make some significant mistakes which did not seem to characterise his previous performances.

Marosi’s distribution seemed a weakness latterly too, so McC must have begun to question whether he could afford Lawlor as just back-up (with the risk of him going) and give permanent no. 1 status to Marosi which a suitably enhanced long term contract would imply. So whilst his preference was to keep them both, doubts about Marosi probably caused him to limit his contract offer.

Marosi can trap a ball when passed back to him .

Donaldo,
Great insight into the Marosi vs. Lawlor situation. It was going to be hard to keep two good goal keepers happy with playing time, even if the money was good.
Your thoughts about Marosi reflect mine, but I did think he read the game better than Lawlor, and was not as many times static as Lawlor can be.
By the way Hound, when I said about overreacting was that whenever I dared mentioned any criticism of a player you obviously liked, it was as though I was brain dead. As I said earlier, I do not see much League One games except Rovers on iFollow, and so maybe my standards are set by watching the Premier League. I love ja606 as we all can express our opinions - positive and negative.
I'm really looking forward to next season and wondering how GM will replace Wilks and Kane.
As we seem to be going after Downing, I think we will lose Butler unless he takes a one-year and then another as Copps has done.
I hope we nail down Andrew to at least solve one back problem. I like Blair, but prefer him more in mid-field. Could Joe Wright fill-in the right back role, or Downing if we keep Butts?
It will be an interesting between seasons!

I am with you Mickey. Losing the “worst case” number would be seriously disruptive. Bringing in players with good credentials does not guarantee a suitable “fit”; for example Crawford is OK now yet still not quite good enough to start every time. And of course choosing competent people is one thing, being sure they will blend cannot be assured.

In Anderson we have a replacement for Butler. He brings different qualities, but I felt he was as effective given his height - perhaps more sophisticated and still capable of further development.

Does anyone know, beyond Downing, who is being lined up?

Nobody mentions the M person... If he goes, the shape may have to change. There must be a working assumption.

Lanza, I'm mainly with you on your comments,
Even though I had been a little critical of Marosi late in the season, I think I'd have preferred too lose Lawlor.
Butts is a sad case for the town of Doncaster, and I hope it works out for him. I think the Rovers offered him a good deal and I'm sure he would have been playing for us two years from now. However an increase in pay for one year seems to have won out (it is rumored he had been offered reduced pay at Rovers), and I hope he gets more than one year at Scunny.
Mason is a sad case as he was developing into a very good right back. In these days of the MeToo movement guys must be more respectful of women and be more careful of how what they do can be interpreted. These days over here it is sad that a male executive is very worried about any business trip with a female in case anything could be mis-interpreted. I'm lucky enough to be married to a wonderful woman for nearly 52 years who followed me where my carrier went, but in the end went from being a high school teacher in London with a bachelor degree to when she retired as the Chair of an English Department of a university with a PhD all because we moved to the USA. We both lucked out by respecting each other.

Had a great day too Lanza, loved seeing the finishing of Heffs, Greeny could still do a job for us, Stock just oozes class. Brought back some brilliant memories watching the boys yesterday. Didn't think we'll ever get to see that standard again, but, hopefully McCann could be the man to bring back the championship league to little old Donny. Missed JR though, always like to shake his hand, I've always said, without JR, they'd be no Doncaster Rovers.

I'd loved to have been there, Stock was absolute class, but I was a Heff man rather than a Hayter man - but without Heff's red card we may not have made the Championship.
Saturday was also a great day for Portland football as the Timbers (men) and Thorns (women) played their last on-the-road games for some time because of delayed construction at Providence Park, their home stadium (sounds like 'Spurs!". The Timbers played their first 12 games away, travelling 29,448 miles - and we had many supporters at Saturday's game in Philadelphia. They drew one and lost five of the first six games, but the latter six were W4 D2 L1 - a big welcome home next Saturday. On Saturday they won 3-1 at the top team in the Eastern Conference with our new Argentinian signing scoring two in his first start for the Timbers (he scored one coming off the bench as a sub last week - maybe we have found the scoring touch we need).
The Thorns played six games and went W3 D2 L1 and will be home next Sunday. For yesterday's game, and at least 5 more, they have lost 9 starters to the Women's World Cup - 4 USA, 3 Australia, 1 Canada, and 1 Brazil - depending on how far the teams go will mean how many additional games they are short of top players. Can you imagine such treatment of men's leagues!
You all may be bored by all this, but football goes on all over the world, and can give interest to expats abroad. The expansion at Providence Park added just over 4000 seats, bringing the capacity to about 26,000. However, there was a 10,000+ waiting list for season tickets, so it is still difficult to get one. "Open" seats in the new area start at about $90 and you go on-line and try not to be ripped-off by scalpers. The official MLS site the Timbers use is honest and transparent, but seats are bought and re-sold. The joys of following footie in Portland.

Heff was brill.
2 finishes from Hayter were just class.
Alfie V Heffs or JH.
Hmmm?

Stock looks better and better. When he was playing with Green it was to deliver a master class in midfield dominance. I look forward to the Legends game every year. Never disappoints.

If you want to sign a good player it is inevitable that other clubs will also be after him and this seems the case with Paul Downing and perhaps Danny Andrew. With Butler and Rowe departing and known competition from other clubs for Downing it is encouraging that Halliday has signed and that we have Wright fit and Anderson too for the number 5 spot.

The loss of Wilks and Kane was inevitable and I suppose that the loan market will be where the search for their replacements will focus. Let us hope that the manager's ability to have developed their talent will give us the edge in attracting the best.

Target for us, ex-Rotherham midfielder Joe Newell, has signed for Hibernian.

posted on 9/6/19

I think it was only the fans who suggested that Newell was on our radar.
As far as I know there was no official indication from the club that we were pursuing him.
He lives in Tamworth apparently so has a hell of a commute now.

https://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/sport/football/doncaster-rovers-why-liam-mandeville-s-departure-shows-there-is-plenty-still-to-be-done-to-boost-youth-set-up-1-9811985. This is an interesting article in the DFP starting with comment on Mandeville's departure and then continuing the wider theme of the club's record in developing young players from the academy. We have heard a good deal about opportunities for young players from the academy and we have seen players like Amos and briefly Lirak Hasani apparently comfortable at first team level, but further chances to show their worth have not been offered. The young goal-scoring forward from a southern non league club signed by Ferguson never made the first team and has even disappeared from the list of players on the club's website.

It is therefore difficult to conclude that the stated policy matches what has actually happened in providing opportunities and this is hardly likely to encourage would-be academy students.

I am amazed at the reported loan fee which runs into 6 figures according to:-
https://www.footballinsider247.com/ibrox-sources-english-club-to-sign-rangers-player-after-agreeing-fee/

I was aware of the convention, but had no idea that such sums were involved; it's only rent when all is said and done, but perhaps there may be an option to buy at an advantageous rate.

Then again it may all be just a speculative rumour.

Sad that Danny Andrew has gone for more money. Apparently another experienced L/One LB has been lined up. I like Danny Amos in any case.
