I don't think he has ever played in Azerbaijan:
a) because of his and his family's safety and
b) because Azerbaijan do not allow Armenian nationals through their borders.
His safety will be genuinely compromised if he went to Baku. It would be the equivalent of swimming in a known crocodile infested river if he went out there.

I partly agree with the OP, on the point that Mkhitaryan should have gone to Baku esp after all the assurances given. He is not the first and won't be the last Armenian sportsman to go to Azerbaijan since the conflict started, and other Armenian sportsmen visit the country without incident. In 2015 Armenian athletes took part in the European Games in Baku and the worst that happened to them was getting booed at the opening ceremony by the Azeri crowd. I suspect his boycott is more intended as a slap in the face of the Azeris than a genuine fear for his life. He has already won the trophy before so this final probably means less to him than to the rest of the team.

Am I the only one who thinks our "Outraged" position, though righteous, is greatly undermined by the fact that come any meeting or discussions in private. UEFA can reply with:
"What you so mad about? He's been crap all season anyway, just a drain on ya wage kitty. YOU should thank us! Now he's refused play, you haven't gotta pay him 120k for being crap next week too"
