Have only watched him in archive , very elegant player, batting average took hit because he played in late 30's as well. Was very prolific in counties and against England & India. Was fine against Aussies as well but against windies , averaged only 18 whereas his compatriots like Sadiq & Wasim Raja excelled against them.

Barefoot your XI should be called English XI post 80's/

Averages vs a specific country depend on context, sometimes you play them as a teenager, some WI bowling attacks in the early 70s were not that good. Some series at those times were against teams where most players were not playing due to the packer ban. Lots of variables there.

Yep, my era.

Barefoot, I like the Gooch selection, was very tempted to put him in. He faces so many good attacks.

Always rated Gooch. Was very good against the west indies, though did struggle with Alderman.

Nearly picked Jack Russell but Stewart was a good keeper and very good batsman.

Agreed there a loads of variable and one of the important one is how successful they were against opponents considered best in their time. Wasim Raja was prolific against windies who I believe were playing their best XI at that time.

Gooch did seem to struggle against those types of bowlers.

He played pace and spin very well, but he struggled vs Alderman, Aqib Javed, Craig Matthews etc.

Gooch struggling against Aquib. If I recall correctly, he and Stewart were the only 2 who had good series with bat in 92 against Pakistan, rest were reverse swinged.

PTID, in the 1992 series, Robin Smith did ok against the pacers, but didn’t read Mushtaq at all.

Gooch didn't play in the 87 series against Pakistan. Anyone remember why?

Barefoot, I think Broad and Robinson were the openers then with Athey as back up. Maybe that’s what Gatting preferred. Don’t think Gooch played when we won in Australia in 1986/7.

He was best among his contemporaries against pace but struggled against spin, leading to early end

PTID, I forgot about Chappell, maybe he can come in place of Border

How Can I omit Warne from that list. Warne instead of Miller at 8 and Miller to replace Waugh at 6.

Two cricketers that were most talented in modern era and their absence is most strongly felt are Warne and Akram.

I doubt he would have been dropped? I'm guessing he was injured?
Just googled it.
Gooch opted out of the ashes tour because of family reasons, so therefore missed the 87 series I presume because of England's successful winter?

As good as they both were, I feel they slightly under achieved. I think their records could’ve been even better.
