Bemused with the team selection, took the wind out of my sails even before getting in the ground,Bennett and waste of space Lawrence starting up front, handed the momentum to villa before they'd left the changing rooms, villa manager must have been doing grandstands!

And handstands!!😂

Frank second mistake was not bringing on the subs at HT.

Maybe Villa's second goal would not have come about had their defence been busy with Marriott?

All in all a great day-out, fantastic (but crazy) pre-match atmosphere in Covent Garden.

I wish people wouldn't get so destructive though. Must be the drugs they take, because I've never felt the wish to damage other peoples property

I left Covent Garden and moved on to Leicester Square. More civilised, you could get a drink and the toilets didn't smell like as bad.

Wish we'd joined you, Spart.
I didn't want to spend our (shortish) time travelling across London, but as it worked out, we probably spent just as much time queueing at Wembley.

Lawrence didn't receive much help from his wing back, Cole hardly ever crossed the half way line. I think the statistics with Cole starting are played 7, lost 6, won 1. That said when Lawrence had the ball he didn't do anything with it.

Our LHS was quite weak yesterday, small wonder that McGinn was MOTM although I didn't think he played that well.

Villa certainly seemed to target the area behind and outside Cole.
Not sure exactly what he was doing in the build up to their opening goal.

Vidal you are wrong on this. I posted from my phone, which I don't do often and said I didn't like the team. So many people around me and on the walk to the stadium were surprised. I can't imagine what Craig Ramage said about it.

You are right in saying that if we'd won everyone would be saying it was a FL masterstroke, but we lost and I blame Frank like I blame McLaren for not bringing that big girl's blouse on in 2014.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
VC 10. Match tactics were to hold villa for 60 minutes and then bring on Marriott and Waggy to run them ragged and overtake their goals tally. It has worked well a few times. But you cannot legislate for the goalie dropping the ball into his own net. It is a fact or life that if a goalie makes such a mistake it can throw the match. Roos, like any other goalkeeper just fell foul of that fact. I don't blame him directly. But if it had not been for that - Franks tactics would most likely have been successful.

Anyway, thank you Ramdini for such a condensed, concise summary - spot on with most of it. No need to apologise for the fractured nature of the article - only the brain dead would not understand.

Think you summed up the ire, angst and bewilderment amongst Derby fans with that sentence 'Franks team selection was a big surprise'.

And that's where the doubt crept in - which permeated itself to the fans as they walked up Wembley Way. I'm afraid it was the main factor.

If it had come off then it would have been a tactical masterstroke. It didn't.

I don't ever remember Brian Clough using this tactic, or Shankley/Busby/Wenger/Ferguson/Guardiola or even Nigel Clough. It's a new one on me and if you sit back like we did passing it along the back 4 and rolling it to the keeper mistakes can and do happen.

I feel sorry for Roos as he had made some good saves since he came into the team. It was a great pity Malone stupidly got himself suspended.

I'm still upset about the management of the game, but I still want Frank as manager next year. If Nigel C did a trick like that he would have been ridiculed.

Pick your best team for the most important game of the season and rest players against their parent club when they are injured and we might be looking forward to going to the Theatre of Dreams.

VC, I didn’t like the team either, nor did my lads. That doesn’t mean I don’t see Lampard’s reasons for it. If Lawrence, Wilson and Mount had all be on the top of their game maybe it would have been different, but only Mount of the three had a decent game. Who knows? The forwards that finished the match well might have run out of steam if they had started, when the opposition were strong not tiring.

Marriott and Wagstaff have had curious seasons, in and out of favour for reasons that haven’t been clear. Both have finished looking like they can do good work at this level. I hope we see them playing together a lot more next season, I think they could get bags of goals if they can forge an understanding.

I think TL losing his Mum recently has been a detriment to him, Holmes was a huge loss, we missed his energy but the real head scratcher was starting Huddz, Villa were always gonna start on the front foot because of it and the defence looked shaky early on and throughout the game.

Say what we like about Malone but we missed his maurauding forward play, did Cole even go past the halfway line, it all if's and maybe's and we deffo would have had the measure of WBA but we played right into Villa's hand with the team selection and they took advantage but we missed a trick with inexperience and sloppy goalkeeping.

Not as gutted as the QPR defeat but would have been great to do this overated shower of swear words.

On one last sidenote, we were also linked with Mings when Villa got him and he has been the catalyst from being the 4th worse defence in the league to a club record 10 wins a row and ultimately playoff winners.

Ah well.

Ashley Cole was approaching their final third just prior to the opening goal, hence being so far out of position. He was obstructed, but not unfairly according to the ref, and was running back into position when the ball went through the middle past the fouling of BJ and into the area Cole would usually have been prowling.

That 10 yard head start meant Tomori came over on the cover and Cole went into Tomori’s position, although Cole then couldn’t affect the cross as it went over him. Bogle tried to shield the ball across himself rather than deal with it effectively and the rest, as they say, is history.

Losing Malone was a tragedy as he was much more effective than Cole. I was not impressed when Frank brought hi into our squad. Even when we played Chelsea a couple of years or so ago and he played for them - he looked worn out and too old. George Evans would have done better than Cole.

Strett - its very good of you to concern yourself so with our performance. Especially as Forest have so may of their own problems for you to ponder.

666 are you OK? You should go straight to A&E and tell then you have put a post up about letting in a goal without blaming Keogh.

I agree with everything you said by the way.

Just out of curiosity, in the second half something happened in the crowd, I noticed a lot of fans no longer watching the game but looking to my right. I was in Block 514 and couldn't make out what was happening but my nephew mentioned a stretcher. I noticed a few security members circulating.

Was there an issue of Villa fans in the Derby end or a fan taken seriously ill? Are they okay?

Saw a fan taken out on a stretcher, Desi.
He had his hand(s) over his face and looked in quite a bit of distress

I agree about the mix up leaving Villa to make an unchallenged cross but look at the replay and you will see El Ghazi dives too early, missed the header and went under the ball. Unfortunately the ball hits his back and goes in to the net. Bogle getting the blame but it was bad luck.

It's not goal that cost us, it seemed throughout the half it was always gonna happen, it was the timing of it when we looked like the game plan had worked.

But the 2nd goal knocks the stuffing out of the players and fans.

Said before the game, no problem losing to a worldly but again an error that little bit of pain is seeping in now.

Did read something on SM earlier from Alan Hinton that he give up his space in the comfy seats at the first game against Leeds as their were 3 potential investers present.

Watch this space folks.

Rewatched the game on Rams tv for the first time today.
Surprised how even the first half actually was, it seemed much more in Villas favour in the stadium.
Such small margins, a few individual errors and unfortunate breaks making the difference.
Will only ever be able to see the future king as a feckin Villa fan now !

posted on 29/5/19

Haven't been able to do that just yet but will, won't make any difference but it's always made me move on betters.

To already have Shinnie in the side means we have addressed a problem ara but I really want Waggy and Jack to say they are staying.
