Amazon enters PL broadcasting picture

Will it have a 2-3 minute delay? Streaming is never real time which could be annoying.

Hope it's better than Youtube streaming the CL final.

Round at a mates to watch that, he has ridiculously fast internet speed and a fantastic TV but it was still poor quality compared to watching it on TV, coupled with it blurring/shadowing every now and again.

No indication of that happening at the moment

Would be quite funny if after all these years of moaning about the 3pm rule and that it won't make a difference to attendances and it's outdated, if all the PL grounds were dead on boxing day because of the Amazon streams

maybe it would force clubs to not rinse match going fans

I thought the 3pm rule was in part to protect local lower league clubs. This move by Amazon might well have a detrimental effect on their attendance.

I've never bought that tbh.

The detrimental effect on lower league attendances is that prices keep creeping up for a poor standard of football.

My cousin is a Chesterfield fan and goes every week, plus a fair few away games even now they've fallen into the conference, I doubt he or many other fans would decide to not go this week because they can watch a game on tv instead.

Maybe the odd casual fan wouldn't go but I'm not sure.

This was announced ages ago as a package the PL were selling.

It was clearly designed to entice Amazon or Facebook in, just means another facking package for your average fan.

They can ram it, i want it to fail.

Not saying in will have a big effect, but I don’t think it would be a good move for them, especially long term. The point I was trying to make was that it was one of the reasons the powers that be used to come up with the 3pm thing.

Agree, i've never bought this argument. Can't say for certain but I doubt it would influence many people's decision to go or not.

Great - another paid platform to watch the Premier League

The 3pm rule is only for Saturdays. Boxing Day is on a Thursday isn't it?

posted on 11/6/19

I love going to Boxing Day games tbf but will be nice if you get the choice to watch any fixture on that day if we’re away.

Nothing worse than Boxing Day chilling at home filling yourself full of Christmas food and alcohol and then the tv fixture is a shiiiiyte one.

Old news this, but it just adds to the fragmentation of viewing and subscriptions.

Streaming is awful too. Look at the fiasco they had in Australia with the world cup rights having to go back to a broadcaster mid-tournament because there was so much uproar over the quality of the streaming.

Someone mentioned the CL on Youtube as well - equally trash.

Easy to say when you support a club that always has empty seats such as yourself

posted on 11/6/19

It will develop rapidly in next 2 years with the money amazon or Facebook can spend to buy the rights. Plus it has to really as we consume media has dramatically changed in past few years.

You dont need to pay for them all plus online will actually make it cheper most likely and offer fans of teams who dont usually get televised to see their teams play.

It's all designed to continue to grow the PL brand and increase the fanbase. Yes of course its revenue driven but online is better and cheaper for the consumer.

You don't think Amazon will have considered this nor have the foresight to ensure their platform streams of the highest quality?

posted on 11/6/19

I have both Sky HD & BT HD, & despite the cost, which is about £80 a month for both there is nothing anywhere near it for quality including 5.1 surround sound.

Amazon will not be at this level streamed, even if it's up with the actual game in real time.

That said, anything that potentially drops the price has to be good

posted on 11/6/19

If you've a hard wired smart tv it will be just as good with a half decent broadband connection in terms of sound and video.

The real time live piece is the most difficult

It wasn't for the CL final, so hopefully Amazon do manage to improve on previous live streams of footy.

DAZN have been doing it for the last 2 years outside the UK, and after a few initial teething problems, the stream is spot on. (Annoyingly, as the PL rights have gone back to Sky from next season ) HD quality etc, and certainly no 2/3 min delay, as far as I can tell it's no more delayed than Sky. And also cost me €9.99 a month instead of the crazy prices for Sky.

Amazon have the money to throw at the streams to make sure they are perfect, and they will do so.
