I think the fee includes some infrastructure costs related to watching TV which could be rolled up into an existing tax if necessary, but funding the BBC should be optional
Multi broadcasting over multiple platforms.
One of the very few things this country can actually be proud of.

Why on earth shouldn't the wealthier over 75s pay?
This isn't a blanket change. The poorer elderly will still get a free license. Why should everyone else pay for all over 75s even if they have a greater disposal income than those paying?
If they can afford it they should pay and if they can't they shouldn't have to.
Somebody has to fund the making of Peaky Blinders and the Line of Duty both of which knock these overrated Amerian dramas out of the park.
Don't watch any of those...might look at a speed through version of MOTD now & then...but that's about it.
Mind you...don't forget you have BBC2 & all of the radio stations, of which millions listen despite the plethora of digital stations now

With the technology that exists today it should be optional, not compulsory, but free to over 75’s on a means tested basis (a large proportion of them hold a lot more disposal cash than younger generations). My TV viewing is largely Sky Sports, Netflix and YouTube. Occasionally listen to 6 Music, occasionally watch a BBC show like Line of Duty, use BBC News app. I could easily live without those things of ot meant not paying this stealth tax. It’s not the money, it’s the principle. Most of their output is PC agenda driven garbage aimed at pansies and the right-on brigade. Like most large state funded organisations they are very adept and pouring public money down the drain.
