There's no magic in watching Brazil anymore

..............

Oh I don't know about that. You can never miss an opportunity to witness some 'Sideshow' defending.

Be interesting to see if Richarlison, David Neres and Everton can step up to replace Neymar, Arthur may freshen up the midfield.
But, yeah, the magic has gone. Not just out of Brazil, but South American football in general.

This is the kind of tournament you expect to be shown on channel 5.

Why on Earth was Lucas Moura left out of Brasil National Team? No wonder the magic of the likes of Romario and Bobetto in USA 94 World Cup and the original Ronaldo has gone.

Same reason Spurs leave him out their starting xi most weeks I guess.

They always invite teams from other confederations to make up the numbers. It gives Qatar good experience ahead of the World Cup, and they are also Asian champions so perhaps deserve it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have they ever invited a European side? I can't think of any

Spain were in 2011 but turned it down. I'm not sure if others have been.
With it moving to Euro Champs years, I wonder if they will try and poach a team that doesnt qualify in future - although hard to see a big team fail in the current format.

Apologies if it’s been explained - how do they choose the invitees? With no disrespect, they don’t tend to be teams likely to win it. Imagine France or Germany winning the Copa America?

There are only a million more Uruguayans than there are Japanese in South America so at least Japan has a link. Just shy of 2million in Brazil

Usually it is Mexico, US or Costa Rica. Mexico have come close to winning a couple of times. However. Quite often they send under 23 squads (like Japan have pretty much done this year).

They did invite Spain, but that was turned down.

Not sure the criteria of invites, but I believe they wanted 16 teams (so 6 invitees) but didn't get taken up. Considering Cincis comment, fan base seems likely to be a consideration. Allegedly Portugal, Spain and Italy were invited this year?

posted on 14/6/19

That would have gone well seeing Spain turn up and conquer the continent again, I reckon Brazil were on the wum with that one.

Japan have played the Copa before, wonder if that was in Brazil as well

posted on 14/6/19

If teams are sending U23's then they might as well invite Brazil B team.
