Chelsea got to the semis.

Is it like the U21 league when you're allowed some older/first team players returning from injuries etc?

I'm not sure, you know.

Could be quite a weak line up in it if Ole does draft the likes of Gomes, Greenwood, Chong and Garner into the squad to be on the bench for league games. Good experience though playing against proper mens sides.

It could be the first step toward B teams in the lower leagues like you see abroad.

Agree that it's good experience for them. Would be interested to get the opinion of lower league fans as to how they feel about this; whether it devalues the tournament. The fact that Chelsea made the last 4 suggests it doesn't diminish the quality, but imagine a scenario where the last 8 are all PL academies...

I don't think the reception from lower league fans was particularly good when they first introduced it, not sure on the actual clubs stances.

This is what the exec chair of the EFL had to say:

The recent feedback from clubs and coaches has been very positive, with the current format continuing to offer greater revenue for our clubs and competitive first-team football for young talent," English Football League executive chair Debbie Jevans said.

not sure how this would work, what league would they start in? also other clubs would have to be pushed out of whatever league it is

Fair enough. If playing one of the 'big boys' academies draws a bigger crowd for a lower league side in a midweek cup game then good for them.

It's a good question. I don't know how they instigated it abroad tbh. Perhaps extending the current divisions down to the conference by 2-3 places each and slotting teams by a pre-determined PL ranking to begin with, obviously with no promotion to the PL or entry to the domestic cups.

Do the B sides in Spain have their own fans outright, that go to games every week etc or is it like our academy where season ticket holders get to go for free anyway. Do they get crowds on weekends where the 'A' team is also playing at home?

Honestly don't know about the structuring of tickets, but I know that in Germany the support for B teams isn't amazing. I think Bayerns B team gets 2k per game as an average, so we're talking conference level support.

I think what's been good about the B team system in Spain is that the teams in the segunda division have had to improve as a result of having Madrid and Barca B to hinder them, and as a result the B teams in Spain have started to struggle and drop down the leagues.

posted on 14/6/19

I know that Madrid and Barca B can't get promoted if they finished 1st and 2nd, but does that then mean the 3rd and 4th sides get promoted or what?

Yea, and likewise if a La Liga team gets relegated then so would their B team, so that the 1st and B team are never in the same division.

Think B teams here would have to go lower than the Championship, they'd struggle in that league if they're just kids. Some good sides in there now days.

posted on 14/6/19

Yea, I'd agree with that in that they'd struggle, but that might be a good thing. They aren't supposed to win. Better they struggle and have a level to aspire to - reckon that would prepare them better.

Yeah knock all the confidence out of them young and get them used to being losers.

The cream would rise to the top. Robertson got relegated with Hull. Didn't knock his confidence. Plenty of relegated players have gone on to be top players.

Over 85,000 fans went to watch the EFL Trophy final. Suggests the U21s haven't diminished attraction for this.

That's good to know. I wonder what the number would've been if Chelsea made it. Were the Semis at Wembley?

posted on 14/6/19

Should be noted that Chelsea didn't get to the semis this season, that was 17-18.

No, semis were at the team drawn firsts home.

Ahhh, my mistake!

Regardless, I'm interested to see how our u21s do in this tournament.

Think many of the concerns about B teams in the league structure as misplaced.
I think many see it as the B teams put into the current structure of 72 EFL teams. More likely would be Leagues 1 and 2 go to a North and South sub divisions. That would create 40+ new spaces in the league structure to accommodate B teams - and more first team squads from lower in the pyramid.
The idea B teams would finish top 6 in the Championship also has little evidence to back it up. The EFL trophy shows that, as does evidence from other countries.

It would probably lead to less players dropping out of the game after failing at a big club due to "culture shock" of dropping down the leagues. They will be more accustomed to it, and lower clubs will also get benefits from these players.
