Is he any better than Jones?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He’s slightly better looking
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t think they want to bumhim
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lingard might. Though he’d probably be a receiver...

If we can get £80m for Maguire then it's sell for me. Heart says keep everyone, but head says that's massively overpriced. Someone said earlier in this thread that he's strong when facing the game but as soon as the ball goes past him he has loads of problems. That pretty much nails it for me. I still hope that he can improve that aspect of his game, but he didn't show much sign of it last season.

Lukaku would be the wide receiver

Not really kneerash.

Just because Jose may have wanted him doesn't mean Ole will. It is still guess work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's true but the question is who is making the final decisions at united. Hopefully it's ole

I like him and rate him, but 80 million seems ridiculous to me, about 30million is about right imo.

The thing is Maguire and AWB improve us a lot and probably guarantee us 4th next season with the way Chelsea and Arsenal are right now.

On the flip side they may cost us £140-150m for the pair which is quite frankly bonkers.

Really doesn't seem like we have a clear strategy once more this summer.

Yep. Totally agree with this and the original comment. £80m for what should still be classed as “potential” is a huge fee.

He is great on the ball and would really suit a back 3. But as we’ve seen with England, put him in a back two and he’s vulnerable and often has a mistake in him.

Could he develop the defensive side of his game, quite possibly. Is he a top 4 defender today? absolutely not.

£80m sounds crazy. But that’s today’s market.

How much are Leicester City the club valued at? £400m? 500m?

And they think Maguire is worth £80m? This is the crazy state of football today. Palace are the same. You could buy their club for £400m yet AWB is apparently worth £70m.

Football gets more and more out of control every summer and sadly we are big contributors to it. I hope we walk away personally if that's the asking price.

You’re right - United are one of the biggest contributors to the inflating transfer fees and wages in the PL

So we’re looking at players that improve us a lot, but we don’t have a strategy?

Maybe the strategy is to buy players that improve us a lot?

Wan Bissaka and Maguire. its just more bang average footballers that wont improve united.

A club like united should be looking at a much better calibre of players.

I'd rate Harry at £30-40M so £70-80 looks like good business - for us ☺.

BS - Evans not a starter next season if Maguire stays?? Surely you want at least 1 quality defender in our back 4?

Hmmmmm maybe Evans and Söyüncü then. Maguire on the bench......

Good point re Aldeweireld, his transfer fee is extremely good value and if Man Utd are looking for a centre back he’d be one to go for.

Whether he would leave Spurs to go to Man Utd is a different matter though, which saying that, is testament to the fortunes of the two clubs recently.

This potential transfer worries me for a number of reasons:

Will it be the prelude to losing other promising players like Maddison, Chilwell and N’didi?
Keeping these players would be a signal of our progression.
How well would we re-invest the money? We haven’t always spent money well after letting big players go.
We should be building a team around our best players.

The only thing that doesn’t worry me is if we get anything like £80m for Maguire then we’d have mugged Man Utd. Surely there are more complete players out there for that fee?

If I could guarantee we’d spend the money wisely and not spaff it up the wall then this transfer would be an absolute no-brainier for that fee!

Some good points Joby. £80m is only a great deal for us if we reinvest the money wisely and frankly ever since the title win we have been very hit and miss at doing that

Yeah his track record in the recruitment market is gash. And we have Lee Congerton as head of recruitment as well which doesn’t help

Rodgers to assess what he wants
Congerton to scout the players
Rudkin to seal the deals

What could possibly go wrong?
