What?

It's a slow time on the forums and I thought you might just be teeing this up for me and others to bite on.

To be fair, it wouldn't take long to ruin your points, but thought I'd ask.

I will answer you just this once, seeing as I am in a good mood.

I have provided evidence of what I witnessed in the last 18 hours. Are there good law abiding cyclists? of course.

However, when people have no fear of getting caught they are more likely to do something stupid. It's the same reason why people often spout nonsense on Twitter that they wouldn't dream of saying to someone's face.

If I drive through a red light, and there is a camera on the light, I get a fine. If a cyclist does they do not. If you give them a way of being identified (e.g. a number plate) then it evens the field.

Your anecdotes are not evidence.

There's so much wrong with what you're proposing, it's painful.

If you want a sensible discussion on this then great, but in my experience people who moan about cyclists won't ever accept it when they're faced with credible responses to their points.

Please respond to my post and we can absolutely have a debate. I did say my evidence was anecdotal, and there are lots of truly abysmal drivers out there. The point i'm making is that they are identifiable and therefore accountable (if they get away with it that's just lucky) whereas cyclists are not.

however the cyclists in London are a law unto themselves from my experience around Kings cross station area

Issues between drivers and cyclists are inevitable when the infrastructure for cyclists is abysmal.

However, I get annoyed when cyclists mix between using the road, pavements, stopping at red lights then going at the green man etc.

Okay, here's a few things for you to consider:

1. Why?

What's the problem you're trying to solve here? The vast, vast majority of deaths on the road are caused by drivers.

There are many hit and runs by drivers every year where no one is caught. Mobile phone use is an epidemic, driving 35 in a 30 is basically accepted by most people and the cost of problems created by driving are huge.

What are the problems caused by errant cyclists? Why would we as a country and a tax payer prioritise that 'problem'?

2. Are drivers actually accountable?

The majority of traffic lights with cameras are in incident hotspots. The vast majority of traffic lights don't have a camera.

How many drivers using phones, jumping reds, speeding by 10-20% do you think are caught? Not many, imo.

3. How would this work?

Okay, so let's say you get your way. What then?

Where does a plate big enough to be recognised by cameras go onto a bike? How many of the red light jumpers you saw were at junctions with a camera?

4. Negatives

It's a proven fact that things like tax and registration discourage people from cycling.

The overall impact is negative. Less people in active travel, bad for the health of the country and more than anything, hugely expensive for the tax payer.

You want to pay more tax because a cyclist running a red light irritates you? Really?

This is just for starters. The whole argument is so flawed it beggars belief.

Well, the implication is they're somehow worse.

Your generalisations are ridiculous.

Road tax was abolished in 1937.

Road tax, which we’ll now refer to as VED, is calculated based on the amount of CO2 a vehicle emits. Gas guzzlers pay more than low-emission cars and electric cars. A bicycle is classed as a vehicle in law and if bicycles were to be charged Vehicle Excise Duty they would pay the same as Band A cars: zero – that’s why you don’t pay tax for a bicycle.

Because there are many bad car drivers does not mean that there are not many bad cyclists. I come across both regularly, and I think the number plate suggestion is valid.
I know bikes are so much better towns than cars but that shouldn't mean that they can do as they wish.

It really isn't valid and a small amount of research will explain why.

Drivers are operating a dangerous machine, cyclists are not. They are not the same and shouldn't be treated the same.
