I see it more as cyclists trying to deflect from their casual law breaking and trying to steer the focus away from them and onto more serious issues

Trying to bury their crimes with some headline news

The government are very adept at this tactic also

Thankfully no one in a position of power sees it like that.

I think the government should be focusing more on the drivers looking at their phones who cause most of the bad traffic accidents.

Looking at their phones. What are they not looking at when looking at their phones?

Phones should t be in your hand at all when driving ffs

If caught you should be done for attempted murder

Mobile phone use while driving is rife.

I am amazed at how much I see - and often at high speeds or in built up areas.

Tradesmen in particular seem not to give a sheite.

But then you wouldn't get your Chinese. You'd also get your throat slit as that could be someone else's view of comeuppance for you.

Drivers using mobile phones is an epidemic over here.
Cants should be banned for life

What do you think should be a bigger priority, cracking down on drivers looking at their mobile phones or cyclists cycling on the pavements? Please also state why.

Just watched the programme.

Comedy.

It’s amazing how angry some people get about other people who are riding a bike.

Clearly the drivers, they may kill some one.But it doesn't mean riding on the pavement should be ignored. The pedestriam streets where I live have so many bikes, scooters, skateboards, that there is no pleasure or comforst on them as you are constantly having to look over your shoulder or take ' small ) evasive action. It's trus I have only seen one bad collision and that was two cyclists, but I don't want to see cyclists hurt any more than anyone else, I'm one myself, so there should be some penalties.

posted on 10/7/19

There are penalties, but police are advised to act with common sense because there are lots of people cycling on the pavement who do no harm whatsoever and because it simply isn’t a big issue when you consider the data.

If you really care about cyclists on the pavement, campaign for better cycling infrastructure in your area.

It's always funny when they complain about cyclists being on the road or pavement, then asked whether they'd be for better provision for cyclists to keep them off the roads or pavements, they are against it. I think it all comes down to jealousy that cyclists can get places quicker and it angers drivers stuck in traffic

They aren't on the pavement, I'm talking about pedestrian streets, a grand total of 3,in the city centre where they are supposed to dismount. The Mairie does not keep récords so no one knows if it is a big or small problem. You seem to be of the opinion that because there are worse things it doesn't matter.

They keep records of injury and death, don’t they?

It’s not a big problem.

Over zealous enforcement would achieve nothing positive. Waste of police resource, no effect on serious injury and death, reduced active transport participation.

posted on 10/7/19

Oh and not to mention, the police have actually been advised not to punish people on bikes using the pavement unless there is good reason.

posted on 10/7/19

Yes, it's a big problem for the pedestrians, especially the elderly. They don't all ride considerately, far from it.

posted on 10/7/19

The rapid rise in the popularity of electric bikes potentially creates an issue in relation to pedestrian/cyclist conflict as they are big heavy things, capable of high speeds. So the move towards segregated cycling infrastructure will be accelerated for the good of everyone. This will be at the expense of road space and not pavement space as we move towards a less car dominated society.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

On what basis are you calling it a big problem?

Anecdotes?

In many cycling friendly countries cyclists and pedestrians mix without issue. It’s simply not a big problem, whichever way you try to spin it.

There is a desire from all fronts for separation. Shared space used to be the favoured approach in most guidance documents but there is a move away from that now due to the conflict it creates. See The Hague for best practice
