It's quality of players which counts Baz. I notice that the teams with the best players seem to win the most games, no matter what the formation. How weird is that.

Can you explain why a left footed player can't play on the RHS of the pitch. Provided they have reasonable ball control it shouldn't matter. I was right footed but almost always controlled the ball with my weaker foot. I just couldn't kick the ball as hard with it. Professionals should be fine, having far more technical ability. During a long period of open play it is not unknown for people to leave their allocated positions.

Probably when kids start playing football they tend to get put on one flank or the other if they are relatively one-footed and that becomes their position. There have been some very good right-footed left backs like our own David Nish, Philip Lahm. Most are left-footed though and there are virtually no left-footed right backs. I suppose the opposing winger would tend to target a full-back’s weaker side. If you have a right-footed left back he might be slightly more vulnerable on the outside but a good full-back can show the winger the way he wants him to go. If the right-sided winger is also predominantly right-footed then he would probably prefer to try to attack on the outside but as Spart says, very often these days wide players play on the opposite side to their strongest foot. Quite often a full back needs to dink it down the line from close to the edge of the pitch and in those circumstances it is better if he is playing on the same side as his stronger foot.

It’s a fascinating debate, that’s for sure.

I think Phil the boss has had a look at the wingers in the squad and thought Anya can’t be any worse

The truth is more likely to be, "let me look at what I have got" before he can decide on who's in, who's out, or what strengthening do we need. I think there were no preconceptions - except perhaps Jozefzoon.

Derbyshire have Worcs on the rack as well.

Worcs 286/9 needing another 87 runs to win with 47 overs remaining.

Worcs were 48/5 at one point - but when did Derbyshire like to make things easy?
