My knowledge of history is shameful.
Anything I know about this is from The Wonder Years.

Visited the space centre at Houston a couple of months ago. They have a Saturn V rocket in a hanger there. Absolutely awesome thing to see.

Was in the viewing gallery of tge Missipn control centre. Didn't get into the actual room as it's being renovated for the anniversary. It's a national monument.

Although I recollect the mission controllers as being middle aged men, the average age was 24.

I was shocked at that but the reason was that they were the first generation of astrophysics graduates...no one older than them knew what they were doing.

And the whole thing was plotted on slide rules.

Amazing

Sure I’ve read similar. The computer equivalent of that mission wouldn’t run a modern calculator.

Something like that.

I think there's two or three but the one in Houston is the only complete and genuine one...the others are part mock ups...if they stood the houston one up today and fuelled it, it woukd go.

It's 360ft long!
And solid as feck.
If you held a gun to my head, it might take a shot in it. The earlier rockets are a different kettle of fish. Just corrugated tin...the things that grissom and those guys flew are terrifying.

The guys who went up on the missions after the failed ones were the biggest heroes of the lot IMO.

Raw courage. Like playing in goals behind caldwell and McManus
