Thing is we wanted Van Dirk in the summer of 2017 and couldn’t get him, we didn’t panic and go else where.
We waited and got him because we believed he was the right one.
I think there’s comparable players out there to Maguire at a whole lot less money.

I reckon we knew he’d be a massive improvement but nobody could’ve known he’d be as good as he has been.
Throw in Allison who again has improved us 99% on what we had before and people can compare him to anyone he’s proved what a player he is in what he’s done last season.
On you’re signings so far.
James - looks a proper problem for 90% of teams you’ll face because he’s electric quick, he’ll have people scared because of it.
AWB, good defender but when your at a top side as a fullback it’s not particularly what you do going back, it’s what you do going forward.

He is probably the best defensive rb in the league. Our defence last season was atrocious

One of our worst areas in defence last season was at set pieces. Maguire would improve that demonstrably. That imo is one of the main reasons why we are looking at him however I agree overall Toby is the better defender. English and 3-4 yrs younger also is an attraction to Ole.
Maguire is worth nowhere near £80m. However, I hope we hold out for something in the region of £90m-£100m.
- We don’t need to sell.
- We don’t particularly want to sell.
- Hull get a fair whack of any sell-on deal, diluting it.
- Unless Rodgers believes Benkovic or Soyuncu are ready to take a big step up, we’d have to source a replacement, whose host club would know we had money to spend.
- We want to send a message that we’re serious about challenging for Europe.
- If we are serious about breaking the top 6, we have to overtake someone. In the current climate, that means Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd.
- If the buying club look as desperate as Man Utd do, you rinse them for all you can get.
shud buy him but also send Jones other way 47m + jones for MAGUIRE

Hope I’m wrong, but awb dosent look top class going forward. But he’s young and has time..

I really, really hope we don’t buy him for the money that’s being mentioned, it’ll be so depressing. He’s hyped up because he’s good on the ball but is he really any better at bringing it out from the back than Lindelof? Is better defensively than Bailly or Smalling?
With VVD, you could see that he was good in the air, good with one-one-ones and had the recovery pace needed to play a high line. Maguire doesn’t, when we get hit on the counter can you imagine him on the halfway line, on his own, trying to contain a decent forward?
I’m not even talking about Sterling, Son or Aubameyang but someone like Ryan Fraser or Felipe Anderson would destroy him IMO.
90 million for Maguire and/or 50 million for Longstaff would be PEAK Ed Woodward
It's not going to happen. The papers are speculating about bids being made and interests. What we can say for sure is that there is interest. Inter haven't made a bid for Lukaku yet the press wrote several different types of offers made. What has probably happened was one side shown their interest, ask to talk to the player while they discuss a fee. Then a bid may be made.
This will end up the same as last year. Its this year's Alderweireld story (last year he was heading to us for 50m-70m by what the press were saying).
I'm starting to doubt the Fernandes deal as well. We were reportedly interested in Tielemans and Ndombele yet turns out we didn't even enquire about them. Our names were linked and that's it. Same here, but City. United interested but I doubt City are.
If this deal goes through for 80m-90m, I'd be very surprised. He wouldn't even be the best Defender at United if he were to sign.

If Leicester can convince United to part with 80-90 million for Maguire it will be a bigger achievement than when they won the league
Surely even Ed won’t sanction that?

He doesn’t score that many from set pieces really. Not as many as VVD does. He’s very good in the air and is definitely a threat but unfortunately you have to counter balance that against some glaring weaknesses.
He has got no pace. I mean Wes Morgan is quicker. He has no idea of what’s behind him so a ball in behind with pacy strikers and he’s facked. We got caught out with it loads last season.
He’s a good defender, he would improve you but there’s better out there. He’s not a patch on VVD for me
He will look like Linford Christie sprinting out of defence past Matic
Everyone cracks one off about Maguire because he’s good on the ball and that’s in fashion for a defender right now. He’s better on the ball than he is defending and that for me is the biggest problem
I would honestly rather have Robert Huth in his prime - for me the most important thing about a CB is that they defend well. Huth was aggressive, strong, unbeatable in the air (mostly because he punched strikers in the face) and most importantly he was postionally brilliant
That’s the one thing Maguire needs to work on. He ball watches and isn’t aware of his surroundings. What he wants to do is get on the ball and get up the pitch. That adds to our attack but when he loses it, we get put under real pressure

I reckon we knew he’d be a massive improvement but nobody could’ve known he’d be as good as he has been.
Throw in Allison who again has improved us 99% on what we had before and people can compare him to anyone he’s proved what a player he is in what he’s done last season.
On you’re signings so far.
James - looks a proper problem for 90% of teams you’ll face because he’s electric quick, he’ll have people scared because of it.
AWB, good defender but when your at a top side as a fullback it’s not particularly what you do going back, it’s what you do going forward.

AWB looks decent on the ball and we don’t know his attacking attributes because Hodgson had him defending 90% of the time.
He is probably the best defensive rb in the league. Our defence last season was atrocious

One of our worst areas in defence last season was at set pieces. Maguire would improve that demonstrably. That imo is one of the main reasons why we are looking at him however I agree overall Toby is the better defender. English and 3-4 yrs younger also is an attraction to Ole.

Maguire is worth nowhere near £80m. However, I hope we hold out for something in the region of £90m-£100m.
- We don’t need to sell.
- We don’t particularly want to sell.
- Hull get a fair whack of any sell-on deal, diluting it.
- Unless Rodgers believes Benkovic or Soyuncu are ready to take a big step up, we’d have to source a replacement, whose host club would know we had money to spend.
- We want to send a message that we’re serious about challenging for Europe.
- If we are serious about breaking the top 6, we have to overtake someone. In the current climate, that means Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd.
- If the buying club look as desperate as Man Utd do, you rinse them for all you can get.

I really, really hope we don’t buy him for the money that’s being mentioned, it’ll be so depressing. He’s hyped up because he’s good on the ball but is he really any better at bringing it out from the back than Lindelof? Is better defensively than Bailly or Smalling?
With VVD, you could see that he was good in the air, good with one-one-ones and had the recovery pace needed to play a high line. Maguire doesn’t, when we get hit on the counter can you imagine him on the halfway line, on his own, trying to contain a decent forward?
I’m not even talking about Sterling, Son or Aubameyang but someone like Ryan Fraser or Felipe Anderson would destroy him IMO.
90 million for Maguire and/or 50 million for Longstaff would be PEAK Ed Woodward

It's not going to happen. The papers are speculating about bids being made and interests. What we can say for sure is that there is interest. Inter haven't made a bid for Lukaku yet the press wrote several different types of offers made. What has probably happened was one side shown their interest, ask to talk to the player while they discuss a fee. Then a bid may be made.
This will end up the same as last year. Its this year's Alderweireld story (last year he was heading to us for 50m-70m by what the press were saying).
I'm starting to doubt the Fernandes deal as well. We were reportedly interested in Tielemans and Ndombele yet turns out we didn't even enquire about them. Our names were linked and that's it. Same here, but City. United interested but I doubt City are.
If this deal goes through for 80m-90m, I'd be very surprised. He wouldn't even be the best Defender at United if he were to sign.

If Leicester can convince United to part with 80-90 million for Maguire it will be a bigger achievement than when they won the league

Ignoring what I think everybody agrees for the moment is the crazy transfer fee this for me could be a very significant signing.
When last season United let the much maligned on here Fellani go they lost the only player who was actually a threat in the air from set pieces which through the season turn draws into wins at critical times.
The current United centre backs are pathetic from corners Smalling especially has a wonderful ability to get under every ball, Maguire will solve the problem both ends of the pitch so this transfer fills a big slab head void we have had since Vidic.

He doesn’t score that many from set pieces really. Not as many as VVD does. He’s very good in the air and is definitely a threat but unfortunately you have to counter balance that against some glaring weaknesses.
He has got no pace. I mean Wes Morgan is quicker. He has no idea of what’s behind him so a ball in behind with pacy strikers and he’s facked. We got caught out with it loads last season.
He’s a good defender, he would improve you but there’s better out there. He’s not a patch on VVD for me

Everyone cracks one off about Maguire because he’s good on the ball and that’s in fashion for a defender right now. He’s better on the ball than he is defending and that for me is the biggest problem
I would honestly rather have Robert Huth in his prime - for me the most important thing about a CB is that they defend well. Huth was aggressive, strong, unbeatable in the air (mostly because he punched strikers in the face) and most importantly he was postionally brilliant
That’s the one thing Maguire needs to work on. He ball watches and isn’t aware of his surroundings. What he wants to do is get on the ball and get up the pitch. That adds to our attack but when he loses it, we get put under real pressure
