Yeah it's not great for either team. Although a small sample size, it could have been a bit better if we had Denly and Roy open from the start of the series.
The hundred is about to announce a few things today. The test players are going to be selected so Burns is going to feature for one of the teams which seems a bit odd. Doesn't he bat at like 7 or 8 in the one day / t20 sides for Surrey? The rest for the most part you can understand as they feature for England in the shorter forms. Anderson and Broad will be non playing players who will get selected but won't play... I dont really understand that.
In fact the teams with the first 3 picks have just been announced.
Birmingham Phoenix
Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Pat Brown
London Spirit
Men: Rory Burns, Dan Lawrence, Eoin Morgan
Manchester Originals
Jos Buttler, Saqid Mahmood, Matt Parkinson
Northern Superchargers
Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid, David Willey
Oval Invincibles
Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Jason Roy
Southern Brave
Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, James Vince
Trent Rockets
Joe Root, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales
Welsh Fire
Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Colin Ingram
Welsh Fire was going to be called Western fire to accommodate the fact that Cardiff was linked to Glamorgan, Gloucestershire and Somerset but settled with Welsh Fire. Good to see Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow, Somerset's (originally Warickshire's) Tom Banton and South Africa's Colin Ingram representing them

such cringe names
aka
Warwickshire
Middlesex/Burns
Lancashire
Yorkshire/Durham
Surrey
Hampshire/Sussex
Notts/Root
West country/Ginger
The whole thing is just absurd. Burns playing for Middlesex, Root for Notts and Bairstow for... Wales?!?
To answer your question TCM, I seem to remember Rory Burns coming in at 3 or 4 in the t20 derby against Middlesex, but that was a good few years ago and to be honest I barely remember. I don't think he actually plays in the t20s or ODIs any more, to be honest. Certainly not the t20s.
Either way he definitely doesn't open, that's Aaron Finch and Jason Roy.
I like some of the things the 100 are doing like the draft, shorter tournament length and we'll finally have cricket back on free to air TV, but so much of it just seems crap for cricket.
Anyway, what's cricket saying?
Can we go back to the summer that was soooooo much better.... 😔

What you reckon mate, you Poch in or out? Desperate times
Desperate time indeed. But have to show poch the loyalty he has shown the club and see if he can see us through this patch. A new manager, knowing spurs, will not even improve us. Poch needs to buck up his ideas for sure but the players are a joke at the minute and we have aloud the squad to become stale and unbalanced not knowing wtf our best team is. Need to give poch more windows, despite a disappointing season we should be there or there abouts in top 7/6 at the end of the season(who knows maybe even top 4 again) but the rebuild needs to be serious with unity and philosophy brought back with young players brought in who suit that model.

I mean, we've known that for a long time now surely
Chris Silverwood named new head coach, not sure what to make of that. He did well with Essex but Kirsten seemed like a no brainer given his resume.
I take it back, football > cricket
What a pathetic appointment. Yet another yes-man appointed from within. As if this guy is gonna change the approach. He's part of the setup that has coddled this group of players for years already. Christ's sake.
That's my initial reaction anyway, not really knowing anything about the guy. I'm just reading that he led Essex to the Div1 title a couple of years back, and to be fair the England bowlers have done well while Silverwood has been a bowling coach, so... who knows.
Perhaps TCM can shed some more light about the guy...?
Yeah he seems like he must have something about him but concerned that he won't do much to improve the batting, whereas one of Kirsten's best attributes is improving batsman.
Will be interesting to see how he goes.
I'm a little surprised they've gone with Silverwood. He's a good coach who did great things with Essex and someone who's been around the county circuit for a long time so understands its importance for the national team. However I thought they might go with someone with a bit more expertise at test level.
I'd feel more confident if he was just coaching the test side but as he's coaching us on all 3 fronts then we'll see how he goes. I have more faith in his ability at improving us in test matches than I do in his ability to sustain our prowess in the shorter formats which I'm absolutely fine with if he's able to do that.
I know there will be many who feel like he's an underwhelming appointment which I understand as he's been in the coaching set up for the last 2 years. However I think that'll be a good thing as it means he's had some time working with the players. He'll be far more involved in coaching the side and whilst I don't expect instant results, I think the attitude and culture of the players in difficult situations will improve and we'll see far fewer of those pathetic batting collapses where we lose 5/6/7 wickets for a handful of runs.
Good stuff TCM
In that case I'll upgrade my reaction from "facking pathetic" to "reserving judgment"
I think he's worth reserving judgement on but it's not against the realms that he could be out of his depth and end up being like Moores so I fully get the indifferent reaction to his appointment.
I mean I personally would have gone for Kirsten as I think a coach of his experience would be perfect for a team who need a bit of a kick up the backside. I rate Silverwood and think he's got the ability to do a good job but he's much more of an unknown. I'd have been convinced of significant improvement under Kirsten.
One thing I read on the BBC article is that he's popular with the players and regularly has jokes with the players. That can be an asset but I hope that doesn't hinder him as this group of players need a kick up the @rse more than they need a best mate at the moment.
Something similar to 09 when Flower came in needs to happen.
Yeah - if anything, the core problem at the moment feels like the whole system being too buddy-buddy at the moment, with Root picking all his besties and no-one delivering any home truths or giving the players a good rollicking when they play badly. That's the fear I have with Silverman - the players are already far too used to him and too friendly with him and he won't have the authority to really crack the whip and be listened to, the players will think they can just carry on in the lackadaisical manner they have been for years now.
We shall see.

I agree. I think Moores was similar in that regard, I think a lot of players liked him and got on with him as a mate. Bayliss was pretty open about the fact that players were left to analyse things on their own and think about their mistakes. I don't necessarily think players need a rocket but they need to be able to receive criticism from the coach and realise he's there to get them to win and not be their mate.
I do like Silverwood and think he'll do a decent job but I think Kirsten would have been the better appointment. I look at Essex and as well as Silverwood did with the side in division 2, since we got promoted, a huge part of our success in the last 3 seasons has been down to Simon Harmer and the wining mentality he has brought to the squad.
Perhaps Silverwood can start that process and then bring in Harmer when he becomes eligible next year
probably why we should have a separate coach for red ball and white ball
