1. Burns
2. Sibley
3. Root (c) (lack of alternatives)
4. Roy
5. Stokes
6. Buttler
7. Foakes (wk)
8. Woakes
9. Broad
10. Archer
11. Leach

^That should be our team going forwards in the series. Curran and Stone as backup bowlers in case of form/fitness, Northeast as backup for Roy/Buttler if they don't score.

Yeah it's not even a knock at Root that he's a crap captain, some players simply aren't captain material. A lot of the best players in the world have been p!ss poor captains.

I don't think Morgan is the answer but equally would be happy with a specialist captain. Brearley was arguably our best ever captain and he averaged 20 with the bat and didn't bowl.

Yeah...Bearley was who I had in mind re Morgan...

I don't mind who's captain really as long as we have 11 players out there on merit

Root averages 40 batting at 3, compared to 50 batting at 4.

His best position according to the stats is at 5, where he averages 71 - 29 innings in that position.

Indeed. He gets worse the more responsibility he has. Great fit for the captaincy

To be fair it's not like there's any other candidates knocking down the door. That's why I'm praying Burns works out - he's been a great skipper for Surrey

Burns is a good shout if he can cement a place in the team on the back of this series although I think Root will be too stubborn to give up the captaincy despite the fact he'd probably enjoy his cricket more.

On that subject, would Stewart make a good coach for the test side?

On the basis that he'd pick Surrey lads over Yorkshire, I say hell yes

Honestly though I don't know. I like to think he'd have a much more hands-on approach where he'd work much more closely with the individual players rather than Bayliss'... well, you know what I think about his approach. Stewart is quite a touchy-feely guy from what I gather, he seems to be much loved by the young players who have come through at Surrey because he seems to be genuinely invested in their development. That's his job, obviously, but I get the sense that a big part of his success has come from really getting to know the individuals and what makes them tick and helping them develop personally as well as technically. Might all be way wide of the mark, but who knows.

Then again picking Surrey players might not be the best idea based on this season

Any sort of coach who might actually provide some coaching to the team would be an improvement.

Surrey's batting line up with Stokes and Root would probably be an improvement on what we've currently got to be honest

That was the most dysfunctional England team I've seen in several decades.
How did Denly ever become part of the England setup?
Who thinks Roy who plays with hard hands 2 feet in front of his legs, is of test quality?.
Buttler reminded us once more that red ball cricket is not his forte.
Bairstow and Moeen looked as if they had little idea what they were doing in the middle of a group of nasty men throwing hard things at them.
The captaincy of Root in this test was dreadful, his field placings atrocious and his bowling changes unbelievably bad.
To cap it all, at the close of play, we were subjected to a load of ECB speak from Joe Root about " we were often on top" etc, etc.

Vomit bucket required. Why can't they just be a man and admit we were fecking hopeless?

We were in a good position at points tbf. From both 122~8 and a 90 run lead we should have at least drawn. But the Aussies won 5 sessions in a row and that kind of sequence happened far too often down under as well.

Never let an England player take your dog for a walk.........

There were periods when we were in control but we were never on top, you need to be approaching victory before you can claim to be on top.

Pakistan are not renewing the contract of head coach Mickey Arthur, who is a potential replacement for England's outgoing Trevor Bayliss.

Olly Stone injured for the next 2 games too, just leaves Archer to replace Anderson then.

Curran is the other option but you'd expect it to be Archer. To be honest I wouldn't be against bringing them both in for Denly and Jimmy.
