I agree he's not as good but his current lack of form is because there's way too much pressure on him. He's easily good enough to average 50+.

Hopefully once Bayliss f@cks off we can put more focus back on tests which should help Root.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree, Root is right that it's best for the team if he's scoring runs and his best position is statistically at 4/5. He needs better players around him averaging in the 40s but he's surrounded by players who's averages are in the 20s and 30s. mid to high 30s you can cope with but players in the 20s in the top 6 is a joke.

I think it's just where we are at sadly. There's a real dearth of talented english red ball batsman.

Whether it's just a lean phase we are having or whether it's a result of coaching where young lads just want to play big bucks cricket I don't know.

They're the best we've got at the end of the day.

I think the most confusing thing about moving Root to 3 is we're weakening our best batsman to protect Denly, who will likely be dropped after this series unless he turns it around.

good point

Though I think when we're two down panic starts to set in. At one down its still early days and just a set back, so I think they bring Root in there to steady the ship.

Despite the early set backs, being 71/2 for 23 overs after being put into bat is a decent effort. Second test in a row where we've not 3-4 down after about 10 overs.

So despite the gloom, Burns at least starting to find his feet in test cricket (please don't get out now I've said that) which would be one of about 3-4 batting problems solved.

Agreed, it's not been easy out there as well. These two have to get through to lunch though.

Must admit I was surprised it took Burns this long to get a call up given his county form over the past 5 years. Touch wood but looks like we've finally found a successor to Strauss, now we just need to find one for Cook

So true.

To be fair to Burns, it was a tough start with the Sri Lanka series away from home against spin, he should have been in the side playing with Cook last summer.

It's to his credit that he's finding some form in this series as he hasn't done too well for Surrey this year.

Typical Denly, gets in, gets out.

Ah Denly, it's a good ball and Hazlewood has bowled well all day but annoying time to lose a wicket as England were just starting to get into the ascendancy. Possibly a bit rocked by the short ball barrage he's had from Cummins.

He does seem a bit Vincey, lovely shots but a bit flaky. Still, a score of 30 helped us recover from an iffy position and he did provide some crease occupation which is what the guys at the top need to be doing.

Fair. From what I've seen from Denly I actually potentially see a test match player there, but he's not getting enough runs.

I know its easy to knock Denly but he is a good batsman and he hasnt done badly today.

Still averages almost 40 for Surrey this year in a poor year.

I find myself crossing everything every minute he's batting. Desperate for him to succeed.

Good lad Rory Make it count.

Stat on the live text saying Burns has made 33% of England's runs in the whole series so far

That's not ideal
