What was RDD banned for?

What’s surprising is he lasted so long.

He can’t help himself when it comes to a discussion around racism.

Still, I'm surprised that not one person has found at least one of the comments to be at least in bad taste.

Its all been RDD bashing which is fair enough but still, WHY?

Why what, Thörgen?

and I do genuinely believe people misunderstand what he’s trying to say quite often.

.................

I would really love to see some examples of this. I really would.

..............

As has been said above, there was a glimmer of truth in his point yesterday

..............

No there wasn't. Irish isn't a race so his point was immediately incorrect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said, I don’t think that was his point. He just didn’t explain that clearly when you and someone else challenged him on it.

I mentioned on the thread that things like 'How can someone with that name play for Ireland? ' can be tiresome but he went straight for the racism card. That is what his downfall was. I guess, after being banned for racist remarks in the past, he was trying to catch people out so he could label them racist too.

RDD is the only poster that has annoyed me here really on a consistent basis and it'd be a shame if he did drive good posters away.

True enough Diafol, though I have two others as well. And I agree about driving good posters away.

You don't think it was his point?

He accused someone of 'casual racism at its finest'.

Against Africans, I think. Not against the Irish.

I’m not saying he was right. His issue, though, was with people’s reaction to the player’s African name - not with people’s views of the Irish.

As I say, he didn’t make himself very clear, but this is how I read it.

The comments about his name just aren't cool in my opinion. If one of my friends said that in conversation about that player I'd be like woah wtf why would you say that. Reckon RDD, having been banned for racism before, thought he'd try and catch other people out for racism and then got caught up in the argument.

No one mentioned Africans.

They didn’t need to. It was inferred from his name that he was African (certainly not Irish or European), which I believe he is by birth. This is what - and I’m NOT saying I agree with him - RDD took issue with: what he saw as an attempt to categorise people by “foreign”-sounding surnames. Irishness was secondary here.

He didn’t explain himself but this is what he meant, I’m sure.

His point was that in this day and age when countries like Ireland are more multicultural that it is a little insensitive to make comments about Irish people's surnames not sounding traditionally Irish in this case.

Well imagine if someone made a comment like that to the actual player's face. He'd probably be like "Erm, OK mate, what are you trying to say?" I don't think it would necessarily offend or anger anyone but it would be an uncomfortable thing to say.

From a friend maybe, but from a stranger it would just be an uncomfortable thing to say.

Just my opinion. I wouldn't say something like that certainly.

Meh.

Speaking from a personal level, I'm not white, and whenever I go over to America (granted I haven't been for a few years), there are always a few people who come out with something like "You dont look like you're from England".

I kind of laugh at their ignorance, but not once have I been offended by it, I dont really find it uncomfortable and no way would I ever dream of thinking it was racist - that is just absurd.

Personally I just dont see how anyone can get offended at something like that, and I've come to the conclusion that people who do are disingenuous virtue signallers.

No it wasn't. His name suggests he could be from anywhere like England, America, France, the Carribean, the Netherlands, Belgium, France or an African country.

Maybe you need to look at yourself for having issues if the guy being African was your first thought.

And I am with ACE totally here.

The biggest issue in today's society are the wishy washy cretins who pretend they are offended by everything.

Anyone who was offended by what Greg actually said needs a good kicking.
