25m, which is the 51st in the world. Considering the amount of success they have across numerous sports I think they are doing bloody well considering their population.
Though I suppose it depends on how you define overachieving. Because given the amounts of money they invest in sport in the country you’d expect them to be more successful than say somewhere like Nigeria that has eight times the population.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also a valid point. A lot depends on how developed a country is especially with certain sports. For example I think Indonesia is the third most populated country and I can’t name one person from that country let alone a sports person.
I suppose if you consider that it’s a fair shout on Ireland. I don’t think it has quite the same level of investment in sporting infrastructure that Australia has, and then considering the population as well Ireland have done very well.
I’d also say, contrary to popular belief, that England overachieve on the sporting front. The perception is that we aren’t because of the football team.

We definitely do well across a wide variety of sports which is a big achievement with our population.
That’s true England do well in most sports to be fair
New Zealand imo. They dominate rugby and are one of the best cricket teams. Obviously not great at football though.

What other sports are there? Football, cricket and rugby are the three big ones at a global level. Tennis seems random. Golf is dominated by the US.
I don't even like rugby but for a nation of 4m to totally dominate it is a pretty incredible achievement.
Sports like cricket and rugby are played by about 7 countries in total. Even golf is quite limited. It's maybe better to compare sports that are universally popular around the world. Now that I think of it, there aren't many. Americans seem to be the best at American football though. Pretty much every year the world champions come from America.
New Zealand got 18 medals at the last Olympics, which is pretty good going.

Just like the champions of Gaelic football and hurling always come from Ireland beating giants such as New York and London along the way
Scotland is good at curling. Even I used to play with Eve Muirhead. It's all pretty inbrred. Not many other people are arrsed with it apart from some other cold countries.
Many sports are based on genetics. Golf less so, so it's dominated more by what countries it is popular in. It's popular in America so has a lot of good American players as there's a lot of people in America. It is also very popular in the UK and Ireland for obvious reasons so produces a good number of top level players. Especially those who play on the links courses as that's where they shiitting live.

I think you could make a good case for Australia being the biggest overachievers in sport.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not New Zealand....All Blacks are & always have been the best...Their cricket team really should be world champions...not bad for a back water island with a few dozen inhabitants
Great place BTW...been to Auckland & most of south island

Golf is a hugely psychological sport and a lot of people under estimate the value and importance of the caddie also

A caddie would probably shoot me after a few holes.

Tennis, cycling and athletics they’ve had world class representatives in recent years.
England had to cheat to win the "world" cup in a sport only they play. And they had hardly any Englishmen in the team!!!
