Hard to disagree with any of that. One thing I'd like to add is James pace, not that we all don't already know how fast he is, but damn can that lad run

Incredible how quickly he closed players down. Hopefully he will learn how to make it more effective from an attacking sense.

James or Wan-Bissaka?
I missed the game. With all the same caveats about pre-season being misleading, on the basis of the match did anyone change / confirm their views on transfer priorities?
My feeling is still that if I could only bring one player in before the season starts, it would be a midfielder. Herrera gone; Matic's legs set in concrete; Pogba able to look unplayable one week and disinterested the next... without reinforcements we're relying on at least two of Fred / Pereira / McT / Garner to step up and be very good all the time. Before we even consider what happens in an injury crisis.

Your point about Chong - watching the game and I couldn't help but think of Zaha and the amount of free kicks and penalties he wins. The lad is still raw, but I think he could be a really useful tool for the last 20 minutes of a game when teams are tiring. Kind of torn on whether we should loan him out or keep him.
Id like us to strengthen that centre mid, Matic can still do a job but he shouldn't be first choice week in week out, also like us to sign a top winger for the right side, James whilst very, very fast, showed signs that he isn't just ready yet...
3. Putting the ball in the net. We should have scored more than one.
--
Inter should also have scored at least 1, they had their chances to
Nick
He will be a work in progress. His end product looks like it needs a lot of work.
But, he will keep opposing full backs from pushing up.
This was the first game of pre-season I saw and largely agree with the OP.
I thought James looked raw and at the moment lacks that composure on the ball in the final third.
The lad Greenwood looks a real talent and would consider him as a decent option for the season.
McT definitely should be starting in midfield, ahead of Matic for example.
Watched a bit of MUTV in the build up to the match and it definitely looks like we are putting in the hard yards with regards to running and sprints. They showed some of the drills that the squad have been doing, I remember this was 'discussed' on a thread a week or two ago.

I definitely think we need a leader at the back. This, to me, is why I think Ole wants Maguire.
Jones actually played like a man who knows his place is under threat.

I'm torn too. If you asked me based on his cameos last season I would loan him 100%. Maybe a 6 month loan might be good and take it from there.

Seems to be a way of getting the players ready for the "pressing" that has been very evident in the tour games so far

I've seen you make that point elsewhere. 'Leadership' is one of those intangible things that are massively important but also hard to put a monetary value on. I haven't watched enough of Maguire at Leicester to really join in on the arguments about his quality as a defender but it strikes me that if he improves our defence and also changes the culture of our team for the better, we're unlikely to keep moaning about the ridiculous fee.
Only saw the highlights, but damn... Wan Bissaka really was in beast mode (and was far from useless going forward too, which seems to have been the forum myth for a while now).
I'd be happy going into the season with mainly the youngsters in attacking roles, even if Lukaku goes. If we could get Bale on loan, it could be ideal imho... While the likes of James and Chong find their feet.
Agree with the above about need another CM (two if Pogba goes).

I suspect the fact that he is British and a leader is one of the reasons that we are apparently prepared to pay so much for him.

We certainly need one Ji. Whilst we can all be happy with the improvement of McT, Fred doesn't look like he can step up, and Pereira just doesn't have it for me.
I hope I'm wrong but Fred just looks like an ill-judged transfer.
I think one will come... There seems to be some truth in the rumour that Ed and Co are getting one player over the line at a time... I can't quite understand the thinking, but as long as we get the targets, then who cares.
Let's say McTominay turns into Roy Keane and Pogba looks like he cares every week. What happens when both of them get injured?

This hasn't been the main story amid the understandable focus on who are targets are but if true, it's scandalously inept. And once again suggests Woodward being personally involved in too many areas - if he wasn't stretching himself too thinly and failing to delegate decisions to people who are closer to the detail, we would be a much more agile operation AND make better decisions.
Fred still has potential, that PSG game showed a real drive and some considerable skill. Not the only game where he performed well, but obviously needs to step it up.

I want to believe this rumour but I seem to remember Ed getting a few done in one go in LVG's first season.
I really enjoyed the game, the tactics and the way some of our youngsters and new signings were playing.
United still need two midfielders and a defender in my opinion, I'd take Longstaff and Fernandes right now. I still don't see how Maguire fits into a high press though, if a player like Vardy or Auba get in behind him he won't stand a chance. I'd be much happier paying what Napoli want for Koulibaly and purchasing an actual world class player.
