Harry is an England centre half so the best comaprision would be do they or could they be up to that standard.
The club have known imo for most of last season that H wanted away.
So the replacement options will be inplace and announced or complete when Harry's sale go through.

Good Luck Harry and Man Utd thanks for all the fish lets see whats next two quality Centre halfs for the price of one ?

With reports of Harry appearing at Carrington this morning, I was thinking about an article to discuss what might happen now for us at CB.

As it is hardly a surprise that Maguire is off, we have hopefully got a plan, but what might that be?

In addition to Dunk and Tarkowski, I have seen articles linking us with Kasabele, and the latest mentioning Ake. All of these would likely improve our defence, to balance the offensive loss that Harry leaving represents.

Any others? Potentially there could be names yet to be brought forward.

There is also the possibility that we could stick with what we have. There would be some sense in this rather than having to pay top dollar for a replacement at this late stage in the transfer window. It would potentially be risky if Soyuncu/Benkovic aren't able to step up.

Harry got his chance in the England team and took it. He’s been very good in an England shirt, no denying it. I’m sure that has influenced Man Utd’s decision in that they see that he can compete at the higher levels to which they strive.

Tarkowski was mediocre to average in an England shirt, and everyone was a bit meh at Burnley last season - I got the impression the whole club didn’t know how to manage the European campaign and it messed them up for half a season. Defensively in the Premier League I don’t think there’s much between them. Of the names mentioned, he probably interests me the most.

Surely the best comparison for defenders in the PL would be to compare their contributions in the PL?

There are several English players who have been excellent in their fields who didn’t make or succeed for England.

What is worrying is we’re getting linked with Ajer from Celtic. No criticism to them or him, but I don’t see him as an adequate replacement.

It depends what we’re after in a defender. I think Tarkowski is a miles better defender than Maguire, but he’s very limited when asked to do more than just defend. I like him though, but for £30m, not £50m!

Dunk I can’t say I’ve seen enough of, but he doesn’t inspire me. Again, sounds like a defender’s defender, but we’ve got that covered in Morgan and Evans.

So then we look elsewhere. Personally I would be looking to replace Maguire if Benkovic isn’t ready. I don’t think a Soyuncu is ready to be our main man at the back.

What I’m confused by is the defenders we’re linked with don’t seem suited to Rodgers style of play. But I’m sure he’s working closely with the scouting team and his criteria should be known.

In terms of goals and assists and ‘big chances created’ there isn’t too much between the 3.

It’s that driving forward that Harry offers that you can’t really see with the stats. Although if Rodgers wants the ball turned over higher up and released from the back early to pacy full backs, the need for this may be less so, perhaps?
I think if Dunk has been at a bigger club producing he performances and contributions that he has, there’d have been much more fuss about him.

Ajer is linked due to Rodgers working for Celtic before. I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Ake seems the best replacement if you're looking for a something close to like for like, but Bournemouth don't want to sell and would probably be the most expensive.

Tarkowski and Dunk seem more or less the same kind of player. Burnley may want close to the release fee if not the release fee itself (45-50m). Dunk may be cheaper as papers been quoting 40-45m. Would either suit Rogers though?

Ajer has the same qualities as Maguire and is cheaper. He is also slow like slaphead.

You shouldn't worry about that. He's better than vvd was at the same age and will be a world class centre half. He would already be an upgrade on maguire

A couple of things:

I believe that Tarkowski’s £50m release clause is only applicable if a CL club comes in for him - but I may be wrong

Why do people use evidence of Harry in an England shirt rather than PL stats? Apart from a couple of games every two years it’s a standard far worse than the Premier League. His quality on the ball, where he’s playing against opposition who have 10 men behind the ball, will stand out in that environment.

It’s like England in general. We look good against poor opposition but, as soon as we’re tested against teams that can really hurt us, we lose. Harry is far more tested in the PL and, at times, has lacked something defensively.

I go for ake
Saw a lot of him on motd last season and was always impressed,

Ake I think would provide more of an attacking threat in relation to driving forward but he is nowhere as dominant when challenging for headers into the box.

As mentioned, guess it depends on Rodger’s thoughts of what he wants to prioritise in terms of the different qualities that Maguire offered.

I think we have such an exciting midfield and forward line I'm less worried about the centre half position, looking forward to lots of we'll score more than you games.

Good luck to Harry BTW, ultimate Professional and I hope it's more of a Kante move than a Drinkwater one.

I like Soyunko and think he could step up. Havent seen anything of Benkovic to know what he's like.

Of the touted replacements I would go for Dunk, Always liked him.

It could be a big mistake to try to deal with Celtic right now. We could run into someone who would take great delight in stringing us along then pulling the plug at the last minute.

posted on 4/8/19

Apparently, Dunk is not a target.
It is between Tarkovski or Ake.
Both very good defenders. I really rate Ake, but worry about his height given we are already a pretty small team height wise

Brighton spent £20M on Friday on a new central defender........surely Dunk is now firmly in the frame? UTF

posted on 4/8/19

General thought is that we’re not interested in Dunk.

The prudent thing is to buy nobody and bring on Söyüncü and Benkovic. Problem is it would likely cost us points for a while.

Bold claims. Who is better out of Ajer and Benkovic?

posted on 4/8/19

Apparently Leicester aren’t in for Dunk, no contact made which would be odd if he was our top target as previously reported. Likely the fee is putting us off.

Nathan Ake and the guy from Celtic are one of two strong options - it’s likely we will end up signing the Celtic bloke on the cheap. First Congerton signing. Which worries me

posted on 4/8/19

Not good for Benkovic if we sign his team-mate. Benkovic looks better. Soyuncu & Evans to start. Chilwell
Ricardo Albrighton Maddison Tielemans Choudhury Vardy & Perez to start vs Wolves. Kasper in goal.

posted on 4/8/19

I think that will be the team PTP. Should be a good open game vs Wolves. They are excellent on the counter so a big year for us. Deep defence to unlock whilst not being too open at the back.

Be sure to teach her all the swearingest chants. Get her up to speed early. If she doesn't come away from the match having told the opposition goalkeeper what she thinks of him when taking a goal kick, you'll need to have a word with yourself.
