Reading through these comments and brushing aside the bravado ‘his not Arsenal standard’ comments, I feel most Arsenal fans are actually disappointed to see Iwobi go.
Having felt slightly underwhelmed by the signing I must say I am now starting to feel very optimistic.

I didn’t realise he was such a consistent starter for you and had played so many games. This speaks volumes in itself.
Considering the premiership experience he has, his record of assists, good link up play, he’s only 23, his fitness record, is all making me now think that we may have found ourselves a bargain in this crazy transfer market.

Iwobi is an Arsenal product and Arsenal fan so naturally we are all disappointed to see him go because we all wanted him to make it here.

The truth is he just isn’t good enough for a top 4 club which is what we are aspiring to be again. Our wide options are so pathetic that ideally we would have kept him, but £35M for a player of his limited ability is just way too good to turn down.

I think you guys are overstating the value of £35m in today's market. 2 years ago when the market wasn't as inflated, we were spending that for Mustafi and Gary Neville said the Valencia board laughed their arses off at us. Plenty of very mediocre players, including from the Championship are going for £20m+ these days.

We are the 3rd highest spenders this window @ £138m. So £35m is a fair chunk of change despite player inflation.

Their price is also to do with what they are worth to the club, he's wasn't a starter anymore so the monies amazing really

How on Earth are people still trying to rationalise this?

A 23 year old attacking player who had freed up a non-homegrown slot?

And who had more than 3 years still left on his contract?

And more than 3 years experience in the league?

Everton have just robbed us lads. The £35-40m figure being quoted is fecking peanuts in 2019. His price just went up by at least £20m over the past few hours.

Well done to the supporters on this thread who stated the clear fact. He's just not very good, Everton were well and truly ripped off

Practically gave away a 30-game-a-season 23 year old homegrown player on reasonable wages to another club in the same league.........only to spunk twice that amount on Pepe.

And when that didn't quite work out, we now find ourselves having to scramble for free signings like Willian and whatever surplus players Madrid can spare on loan.

I'm so glad everyone's happy with the way things have gone since then.

I knew you'd point to our other transfers to deflect.

The Iwobi sale was not a mistake Everton were ripped off. The end.

posted on 27/2/21

Wtf. Who in their right mind would say selling Iwobi was a mistake. Even without hindsight it was obviously the right thing to do

posted on 27/2/21

We had already splurged £72m on Ivorian Bebe before Iwobi was sold so don’t see how the 2 deals are related. I’d be more inclined to say that Iwobi’s sale opened the door for the likes of Saka and Martinelli

That was always the point.

Pretty much the same mistake we'll end up making if we succeed in hounding Bellerin out of the club.

A momentary sense of misplaced triumph from the sale, followed by the realization that the shiiit recruiters at Arsenal wouldn't be able to come anywhere close to a proper replacement. Even with twice the amount made.

That's what you said when we sold him. Don't pretend other issues were your main point.

Dude, no player is hounded out of Arsenal.

The club and manager decide either to keep them, or cash in, or the player signs a new contract or decides to move on.

If Arsenal fans had the sort of powers you’re suggesting we have, we probably wouldn’t be able to field XI players every week.

Selling Bellerin won’t be a mistake tbh

Always been a fan and think he gets a raw deal from most Arsenal fans but it’s pretty clear that he’s not the same player since than injury in 2019. Should sell him when we can still get £30M+

The amount was peanuts.

A 23-year old homegrown player on a long contract with an average of about 30 games a season over half a decade should have brought in at least £50m pre-Covid. And I suspect you'd struggle to bring in a similar player for less than that post Covid.

The Kroenke years have turned us into mugs when it comes to selling our players.

So how did Everton rob us exactly? You still think he's worth 20m more than what we sold him for?

Mate, I could make 30 appearances a season and I count as homegrown. If arsenal sold me for 10m for example that would be a good sale. Cos I'm fking shiiiiiit mate.

posted on 27/2/21

No chance Everton would get their money back if they sold Iwobi this summer, and wouldn't even without the effects Covid has had on the market.

They got a 23-year old homegrown player with over half a decade of regular PL experience under his belt for only £35m despite a superheated transfer market.

We would have struggled to land a similar player for £50m if we'd gone out into the market on the next day.

How many times are you going to make me repeat this?

posted on 27/2/21

The reason we got so much money for him was because he was 23 years old and home grown. If he was any good we would have got more than double what we got for him. See Sancho for example who has genuine quality and is being touted as a £100m player
