Both Elland Road and the Nou Camp pitches are 105 metres long and 68 metres wide

Is that so?! You also have the optical illusion of the
seats around the pitch...Elland road seats border
the pitch...nou camp doesn't...makes a big difference.

I going to skip straight past the 'optical illusion' comment and ask the point of this thread?

Most top footballers are very good athletes nowadays and pace is essential and part of the game, to compete at the top you need that edge, it's the one thing you can't train and the one thing defenders hate the most.

Obviously an untalented footballer who can run fast is useless, what's your actual point?

Side has lacked pace for years and suffers from it still.

We have Harrison running the left side and when he gets into full swing Costa will run the right!..

This team is fast without speed because the whole team have it drilled into them to move the ball fast, and they do it very well, speed on the wings will do a better job at opening up the defenses and putting more pressure on the opposition, but, the team is fast without it but will be better with!..

Pace, quality of balls into the box and higher conversion rates all count.

Add in a defence that solid for 90 minutes and we have a chance. Aidy White had pace but no direction or end product.

Folk don't know the difference between being above average, nippy and having pace. Lewis cook was nippy, Roofe was nippy. Nippy will give you an edge, but you will never leave players for dead.

Rudy Austin had pace! I'm talking sprinter speed! Since then, we ain't had any! Name one player who can be 3 yards onside and still spring the offside trap? Pace is lethal as it forces teams into a fearful state.

Add 2 pacy ballers and a striker to this team....we are scary.

Ps this is not true

Just a word on the dimensions of pitches from the
first comment...a bit suspicious that the Nou Camp and
Elland Road being exactly the same size?
I would like to know the dates when either was
measured, more proof needed...lots of clubs change
the size of their pitch from time to time.
Some of the TVs commentators must have it wrong
then if both pitches are the same size...I often hear
commentators observing the Nou Camp as vast
open spaces when Barcelona play, but never heard
commentators say Elland Road pitch has vast open
spaces!

So Mike, say why!..

Beckford v Northampton was example of the pure pace he had. Gradel was quick also.

The team isn't fast. Otherwise teams wouldn't be so care free in their counterattacking. We are fluid, not fast.

I think that's a good point Mike..."fluid not fast" like
that!

I'd rather have a slow sluggish player with a footballing brain rather than a fast 0-60 in 5 seconds leggy player with limited knowledge of reading a game.
So long as you can move around the pitch at a slow to moderate speed & have the intelligence to read the current set play & positions then pace isn't necessary, no is it important.

Oh & five stars from me, good article.

The team move the ball about fast, and in doing so move forward fast, that's how they press!..

The reason we get caught out a lot is because off the way we go forward leaving the back line exposed!..

Its Bielsa's way of playing but everybody always blame the back line!..

Disagree, do you know what system destroyed the tiki taka? It was the Bayern pace and power play. Ultimately this is a sport of athletics and those who have athleticism as a backbone do well. Look at City. Yes they have brains and Technique, but they have an abundance of athleticism which always comes up trumps.

Imagine the following, with blistering pace...

Ayling
Alioski
Dallas
Douglas
Harrison
Bamford

We win the league.

Mike the conductors of 'tiki taka' were Xavi, Iniesta
and Messi, they destroyed many teams with slow
momentum, sometimes at walking pace, then the
right pass at the time...their pace or speed of thought
was in the head, an intellectual form of football if you
like not blunt pace, though to be fair they could mix
their game as well.
