The top six - which kid comes out on top?

Brewster appears to have taken Sturridge slot on the bench but he is behind Origi, Shaq in the pecking order so wont get much game time other than cups.

From that list Foden stands out.

Regarding Foden, I'd tend to agree but the question is - will he get the opportunities?

If England keeps up this incredible rate of youth development they'll have almost half a team in few years. Impressive stuff

Is it because he comes out on top?

No, it's because he's an established member of Liverpool's first XI and this article is about youngsters who have yet to reach that point.

I'd take out Greenwood and put Lingard in. He looks more likely to make a breakthrough this season and could be special in a few years

I think Lingard has a few more years of development yet before he can truly be considered an exciting youth prospect.

As has been said many times Foden is getting minutes in line with his age at pretty much exactly the same rate as Xavi and Iniesta. He turned 19 in May. Willock and Brewster too turned 19 in the spring. They don't want too much football.

Greenwood is too young at 17 to be getting major minutes, he'll break down if over played and at 5ft 9 and 11 stone I can't imagine he's stopped growing yet.

Mount looks ready.

KWP is 22 and there are too many ahead of him for England for him to claim a spot imo.

What has Foden done that makes him better than Lingard?

I haven't seen any reason to rate Foden except for him playing the role of making City look like they have interest in developing youth. Granted he could be a top player in future but he's never looked the part when I've seen him, not enough to make me think his future is at Man City.

In your opinion - I don't agree and as we see other youngsters overtake him in their gametime, that starts to look less solid as a view.

Haven't seen any evidence about players who play at a young age breaking down.

You've not checked either.

There are dozens of examples of players who played loads in their teens who breakdown later (Pato, Owen, Fowler, Ox, Bale, Torres, Ronaldo, Wilshere, etc, etc).

It's not good for them. I remember Pep talking abput Wilshere and how Barca have six of him in their academy. They hold them back in Spain a bit, it'shugely rare for a teenager to get loads of minutes, and hey presto they get less injuries and have longer careers.

Dont want to tempt fate but mason mount looks level headed, which added to his talent can only be promising. Looks a great player already.
If zouma keeps having nightmares we could see tomori coming through too.

There’s a quote from Fergie out there about Lingard being a late developer. Can’t remember the exact words but something like: “When he’s 44 and playing in a local veterans’ league, then you’ll see some player.”

I just can’t get over my disappointment that someone with a name like Mason Mount is not a cowboy.

And there are plenty who haven't.

Usually those injuries are linked to their body type rather than when they started playing.

Also, as I said to you last time, I'm not advocating that they suddenly start playing 50 times a season.

posted on 14/8/19

Ronaldo and Messi didn't play that much in their teens as it goes. Thw line I drew the other day was 100 games before the age of 21. Bodies are different though and I'd say Ronaldo and Rooney were stronger than Foden at the same age so can take more stress. Messi had peds ffs.

Proper Ronaldo did though and he was fvcked.

posted on 14/8/19

Tbh it's not really up for debate. There is loads of data on the subject.

Anyway Foden will do the best imo, certainly for England. Good to see tech players like him and Mount come through for England at CM too. I think TAA will end up there so that's a good three to have.

posted on 14/8/19

If a player's game is built on pace, like Owen, then arguably he would get more from his career by playing early and retiring early, than starting late and playing late?

posted on 14/8/19

swear messi had over 100 games by time he was 20

posted on 14/8/19

If you count Barca B yeah.
