Would you like to pay for analysis you previously got for free?

Hope it dies a death, we already have to pay for too much schite as fans, never mind paying nobodies for opinion pieces.

I was going to write a thread, that it’s a shame what’s happened with Phil hay.

I certainly won’t be paying

posted on 15/8/19

Did he go there of his own volition?

I see no problem with this, you would expect to pay for fourfourtwo and their journalism. If you can get exclusive access then why should that be free.

I haven't paid but I have no objection to it.

Not done it yet but I might, a couple of mates have said its really good

I've signed up for a year.

Miles better articles than he was writing for the YEP. It's not just match reports and player ratings, it's in depth longer reads. Seems to have more scope and insight than he got at the YEP. Stuff on other teams is really interesting too. I recommend it if you like football writing beyond just match reports.

Problem with local newspapers is they just haven't adapted to digital world. Phil Hay had 1000s of twitter followers, massive reach and yet the YEP barely had a functioning website. They got so much traffic from Leeds fans but couldn't manage a website. Impossible to get a digital subscription to their newspaper as well. Just poor management.

I've signed up, much deeper content, am sure there isn't the concern of upsetting paper you right for by being completely independent when covering the club.

And its only £20 for the year I think with the 50% off....cant really complain at that.

It's the equivilent in price of supping 5 pints of p-1ss down at the ground for a years subscription.
It really is a no brainer, little wonder Yorkshire folk are classed as tight asses.

Definitely a brainer.

Why would you pay for something you were previously getting for free knowing fine well if enough people are smart enough and don't pay for it everyone will get it for free.

You weren't getting this much indepth analysis for free though?
The YEP provides limited news.that''s if you're lucky enough to get onto to their web site which is a challenge in itself.

The majority of these writers are producing what the previously produced and we could access for free and now expecting us to pay for it.

More content but it's not like we are short on football opinion pieces online.

Each to their own but i think it's a mugs game to pay for it, hopefully it doesn't take off.

HB you say it like it's a right to get this stuff for free. Most media publications are in massive debt because they can't turn readers into profit. People used to buy papers now everyone just reads them online for free.

Future of journalism is behind a pay wall as that's the only way it can continue to exist. Otherwise we are left with clickbait articles that are based on nothing just trying to get as much advertising as possible, which is increasingly what local papers have been doing

posted on 15/8/19

They make enough from advertising to survive that will do them.

I don't think a lot of these guys are worth reading when it's free so i'm not going to pay and the ones that are the reason i hope it fails so we can go back to reading their input.

Plenty rent-a-gobs waiting to take their places.

Am not knocking phil hay because you’ve got to follow the money sometime

But great point about YEP website, utter disgrace. Must of been a factor for him too

And some great points been made by posters, made me think differently to it

posted on 15/8/19

Not a world of difference between those people who think they have a right to access other people's writing for free (their work and their intellectual property) and those who think they have a right to access Leeds games via whatever platform for free in my mind.

My youngest daughter's boyfriend is a sports journalist and I've just asked him what his thoughts are. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a hypocrite...., I'm signing up now. Apparently its the dog's thingies...….

Agree, Yorkie, but only because the other writers at the YEP are awful. Urquhart, Sobot, Prutton and the new guys cannot articulate or develop a single original thought between them. Phil is first and foremost an investigative journalist who writes about football. You don't have to like his opinions to recognise that his sources are impeccable, and his thinking is razor sharp. I'm going to have a look at this site, for sure.
