I asserted no such thing and I did specifically mention large corporations in my initial post.

But their solicitors will always be smarter than HMRC - it's not good enough just to say 'close the loopholes'.

I hear this one a lot. Probably a minor point in this wider debate here but this one has caught on and there is no substance to it.

Government have unfettered access to top legal counsel...they can afford the same lawyers as the big corporations.

Loopholes are left either deliberately or through 'carelessness'

It's certainly not impossible for government to draft clear and bulletproof tax regs and impose massive penalties for failure to comply. It's also not impossible for them to quickly close loopholes as they are discovered.

They just elect not to.

My view is that companies need to take some social responsibility and for people who say 'well they pay what they're legally required to', I just think that is a massive cop out.

Interesting POV but I don't agree at all.

Companies that operate globally cannot be held to account with ease and if the government attempted to do so, I have no doubt that the likes of Amazon would throw more money at it than HMRC.

We'll disagree in that case.

I'm not saying it's easy...but I certainly don't think it's impossible and it's a poor excuse not to try.

They do try, don't they? I believe a lot of tax payer money has been spent on it.

The people running those businesses should be ashamed.

Yeh, no arguments from me there.

But as someone pointed out, what many of these companies are doing is legal.

Morally bankrupt, but legal.

Agreed. And we need to find ways to make more of it illegal.

As for Amazon, they argue that they contribute through the massive amounts of tax paid by their employees and that they create wealth through that.

It's a short term argument and their long term goal (and don't have any doubts about it) is the employ one man and a dog.

The man will be there to feed the dog and the dog will be there to make sure the man doesn't touch anything.
