Lingard baffles me a bit.

Not really sure how he's at a top 6 club.

Brilliant! I can't believe that he hasn't been given a new contract. And anyone who thinks Lingard can offer something this kid can't should follow another sport.

Got lots of space and his turning on the ball is impressive

I really hope he makes it, and reckon he has a great chance despite his size. That said, comparing AG's performance against League One Rotherham with JL's performances against Premier League sides isn't like for like. It puts unfair pressure on Gomes to expect him to come in and upgrade the team.

Wonder how Lingard would've fared in the same game in that role on the pitch vs Rotherham.

I wasn't really comparing performances to be honest, I'm making more of a point that he can cope with the physical demands of the Prem. I'm comparing them purely on the attributes they possess, I think Gomes is miles ahead in that respect.

I think we should give Gomes a chance and allow him to make mistakes, he'll grow into a class footballer imo.

Agreed I think Jesse offers a lot more off the ball than off it, however from what I have seen from Gomes, he has the ability to press and great ability on the ball. It would be an interesting call to make against a side like Palace where you would expect to dominate the ball

KFC the fact that League One can be brutal doesn't mean a player who can cope there will be able to impose his game at Premier League level. The increased challenge of the Premier League is manifested in the speed of reactions, how quickly and accurately space is closed down - greater athleticism even while there is probably less contact.

What if Gomes never has a growth spurt or bulks out much more?

posted on 22/8/19

A bit worrying we haven’t tied him down.

I fear we’ll lose him.

He needs to be introduced to Messi's doctor.

He'll end up with the physique of Danny DeVito / Johnny Vegas.

If jesse gets dropped it's likely mata coming in

I don't think we'll see Gomes until league cup and europa games

Handling the physicality of League One doesn’t tell us anything about his suitability to play in the premier league. He won’t start at the weekend but I’m hoping he’ll be on the bench.

My hope (I'm sure oles too) is the youngsters force their way into the team with good cup performances.

Premier league isn't just about physicality it's also the speed at which you have to think and make decisions. Your playing against much better players than your used to and you. They will be quicker, more reactive and anticipate your moves better.
Yes he has to be given minutes so he can adapt to that but saying he will come in and do more than Jesse is total BS. Throwing him in could cost us a lot more and do him damage. He needs to be brought in with 20-30 mins to go for a few months and start EL and cup games.

Sorry dude, but there’s no way he should be starting ahead of Lingard yet. Lingard was very good in the Championship, so you can’t assume Gomes would be able to play like this in the PL where he won’t get nearly as much space or time, and that spin move will be found out after the first/second time he does it.

I think my point about physicality is being blown out of proportion. I’m just saying that he’ll be able to handle playing against a team like Burnley who are physically rough. I’m not using the match I’m the link as an example of how he’ll cope tactically in the Prem or how he’ll adapted to the overall speed.

When it comes to comparisons with Lingard, all I’m saying is he has more in his locker. The application of those tools is another matter entirely, which is why I’d still play him and allow him to make mistakes. It’s worth the risk imo.

But you can’t use a game against Rotherham as evidence that he can cope against Burnley. It’s not being overblown, when it’s literally basis of your argument of course it’s going to be questioned. It’s a weak argument.

It’s not the only game he’s played though, who makes a conclusion off of one game. The highlights from the game in the OP only gives more confidence he can cope.

He has never struggled when appearing in the first team. In pre season or the hand full of games during the competitive season.

In the OP I said “he seems to handle the physicality very well” I’m hardly drilling it home that he’s 100% guaranteed to succeed which is why I said it’s worth the RISK in starting him to find out.

He’s played 29 minutes in the first team. So you are clearly drawing off that Rotherham game given how you’ve framed it in the OP.

All good cameos!

I'm drawing off of all those minutes including pre season. The potential is there for all to see.

I’m not doubting his potential, I’m questioning the reasoning for proclaiming he can handle the physicality. It’s an obvious concern given his size, and until we see him playing starting against premier league teams one that won’t be answered.

Ole isn’t just going to throw the kids in, even if there’s undoubted potential, because he’s got a squad to manage. It’s more important for him to get the likes of Lingard in form rather than throwing them under the bus and replacing them with untested teenagers.

These kids will need to be gradually introduced into the team. Greenwood looks the most ready out of all of them but he’s being treat with kid gloves.

I said he SEEMS to be able to handle the physicality and that it would be a RISK to use him but still worth it.

It’s not really that radical of an opinion which is why I said it’s been blown out proportion.

As for throwing him under the bus, I disagree. imo Gomes seems to be the most ready. He uses possession more wisely and seems just as talented in the position he plays in. We’ve already wasted 6 years so if we are truly rebuilding for a 4th time then I’d rather use the next six years giving our most talented youngsters minutes.
