Thing is there's no actual appeal system in place like there is in cricket and tennis so as you say the officials are in control of when and when not to use it.

If each manager had one appeal, which would be kept if correct but lost if wrong then it would work better.

A transparent system in cricket and rugby works really well and adds to the spectacle, especially to the paying public in the ground
What we have is simply a disgrace and is only what is to expected from such an incompetent body

Ref who is 5 yards away is over ruled by Marriner who was deciding what to give by watching TV. It's rubbish.

I think it'll have to affect Liverpool before anyone in authority acts.

What the team who were gonna get relegated when VAR came in.

What confused me was an incident in the Liverpool vs Arsenal match. Aubameymang was played through and was clearly offside. Had he gone on to score then VAR would have disallowed it. However, Aubameyang was tackled and a corner was given to Arsenal.

Why was a corner given when he was offside and what would have happened had Arsenal scored from that corner?

Used to be a yellow for time wasting. It's bizarre.

If a goal can be disallowed because a players' armpit is judged to be offside then presumably a player is allowed to score with his armpit.

That's a good point although perhaps it's treated with "phases of play".

So in the above scenario because Liverpool then have a full chance to defend the corner it doesn't fall under the same rules as if a goal had gone in during the first attacking move.

If anything like that is in place then it should be clarified (if it's not already) and be consistently implemented

Many things need looking at, including the 'not a penalty if it hits a defenders arm, but not a goal if it his the attacker'. One rule for all surely? The implementation of VAR certainly is taking some bedding in. The Arsenal corner from an offside run was crazy.

I didn't want VAR, and don't like it now it's here. I understand all the reasons for it, and making the game fairer. But football has become the most popular sport on earth without it, and stoppages spoil the flow.
People say football has moved on, but that's a meaningless phrase, the basics haven't changed much at all.

People keep saying ‘it’s not VAR’s fault, it’s the people who make the decisions’ but those same people are part of the VAR process.

The decision to not give Chelsea that penalty yesterday or send off the Norwich player who stamped on the Chelsea players foot were shocking and some of the decisions in the United game were terrible too

The amount of defenders of VAR get smaller every week and it’s going to be as unpopular as I said it would be as I watched a whole season of it be rubbish in La Liga last year. It’s proving to be even worse in England this season if even possible

I like VAR. Not perfect but is pretty accurate on offside goals. It is nit like the referees in real time are perfect

posted on 25/8/19

The only thing VAR is going to solve is offside goals and dives with obvious no contact, with the matter of opinion decisions we`ll still see the same old bias on the field, which will be backed up in the VAR studio.

Andre Marriner decides whilst eating a doughnut. Great system

How does Premier league VAR compare to other leagues?

posted on 25/8/19

In cricket the technology for decision review is really good. VAR is mostly just more subjectivity, and on ever finer margins, not clear error as it was supposed to be.

Tbf, you’d just get attacking players kicking the ball at the defenders arm and the refs/VAR having to give penalties for it, it’d be carnage.

I actually don’t mind the handball rule, Laporte, for example, changed the direction of the ball with his arm and City scored from it, I don’t think that should be allowed to stand tbh.

The “deliberate” aspect has never seemed to apply with handball, how many times have we seem a player slide in to block a shot, arms by their side only for the ref to give a pen when the ball strikes?

posted on 25/8/19

Laporte did not change the flight of the ball.

The contact (if any) was so minimal it took 1.5 minutes to detetect it.
