Strange results happen at the start of the season. Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal all have their own problems.

I expect it'll be us and Chelsea who miss out, Arsenal just have too much firepower for most and Spurs are in a different place to us at the moment.

We know this eleven is never going to win us anything. My hope is that come the end of the season the likes of martial, rashford and maybe a couple of youngsters can cement themselves as starters we can trust.

I’m not sure bout Arsenal. They didn’t exactly blow Newcastle or Burnley away and bottled chances to take the lead against Liverpool.

Also people keep saying how much better spurs are than us. They finished 5 points above us last season and lost 13 league games and only for a freak result they’d have lost 2 out of 3 already.

Other than Liverpool and City there is no great sides in the league.

I think we are going to have to get used to this sort of performance over the season and to remember we didn't expect miracles.

We have a young team. Young attacking players will put in inconsistent performances and our defence will get caught on the break from time to time.

Against lesser teams at home, the opposition will be fearful of our pace and play a low block. Our attack at the moment doesn't have the guile to break it down on a consistent basis yet.

I think Ole got it wrong in terms of selection too. Starting both Lingard and James was a mistake.

I wouldn’t start Mata much but this type of game would have suited him imo

Good one Paul.

Almost as funny as when you confessed to having a very small willy.

Spurs are overrated and seem to be falling apart. Arsenal have a good front line and pretty much feck all else. No one outside Liverpool and City are nailed on for top 4.

I think the run to the CL final really papered over the cracks at Spurs. They can’t be blaming wembley now.

I don't really follow the label Mata had as a player who created and unlocks defences. If that were the case he'd have done so for us.

His best asset is his composure in the box.

Fair point but he can pick a pass around the box better than most. Also we had a few free kicks on the edge of the box the last day and he’s the only one we have in that is good from that range.

I missed the game on Saturday, but have just watched the 20 minute highlights on MUTV.

And I’m a bit confused about the epic meltdown and assaults on Ole over the last couple of days to be honest.

I missed the other 70 mins of the game, obviously, but I’d already read that we had over 70% of the possession.

Then, beyond our goal, I watched Martial with a goal-bound effort blocked on the edge of the six yard box, James kept out with a superb point blank save, McT just clearing the bar with a header, a decent Rashford freekick, another goal-bound James effort blocked by a defender, a stonewall foul on the edge of the box missed by the ref, and an incredibly unlucky penalty miss.

And surely they should’ve been down to ten men first half after a last man foul on the edge of the box.

So I checked the stats again and saw we had 22 shots to their three all game.

So what am I missing? Looks like a dominant performance in terms of control of the game and attacking opportunity let down by wastefulness/poor finishing and a defensive error?

One of those days, or can someone help explain to me how else we lost?

..................

It was one of those days but it was too familiar.

Lingard kept losing the ball, ditto Pogba. Rashford kept making the wrong decision. Pogba shouldn't be playing as a deep playmaker. Lindelof returned to being weak in the air.

Some times it just feels like there’s a curse around OT when the smaller teams come to town

Pogba giving the ball away for their winner looked like a little further evidence of the fact that he needs two other midfielders on the pitch with him.

Looking at the stats it looks like all of the front line barring James were ridiculously wasteful.

Seven attempts between Rashford and Martial with one on target; Rashford dispossessed five times with a shocking pass completion rate, and Lingard and Martial both dispossessed four times.

He had ditched playing deep by then. we didn't really have a midfield for the last twenty minutes.

Mata and Greenwood came on too late.

I think it is time to give Gomes a go in Lingards role. He can't do any less. We certainly need better options than what we had on the bench.

Sounds like we needed a lock-picker yesterday, rather than dynamism.

It would’ve been good to see if Gomes might have made a difference.

Yeah gomes should be the first of the youngsters on the pitch. He has more experience and we have nobody else with his attributes.

He is the player with the skill set we need probably more so than Greenwood just now for a place on the bench at least. Testing times for Ole to get this right as it won’t come from Lingard

Pereira will start next game ahead of Gomes and Lingard I bet, this is still a massive improvement on Lingard in my opinion. He works just as hard but with superior creative capabilities.

I hope to see Gomes on the bench at least.

Like I said earlier, it is going to take some time and there will be inconsistent performances and strange results all season.

Playing style and performances are what I am interested in and I like what I am seeing so far.

Pogba should play higher up the pitch and Fred/Matic next to McTominay. Lingard shouldn't be starting games and the jury is still out on Lindelof as far as I am concerned
