I don't mind Darmian, better than Young and Rojo. If he goes we have 2 full backs for what could be a 60 game season.

posted on 29/8/19

No point paying his wages if he's getting an odd game and giving a poor performance.

We do have Dalot, Young as back up to Shaw and Wan Bissaka. We also have Brandon Williams and TFM who could play there as well if needed.

My bad. Completely forgot about Dalot. I'd like to see Williams in Europa games, TFM seems to have fallen off a cliff.

that's what I thought, how do you improve a squad by letting a player go without replacing him for a better one, even if its by 0.01% worse its still weaker, unless he feels a youngster being promoted will be better in the 1st team than him maybe?

Exactly

It’s great and all that we’re getting rid of players but not replacing them is very bizarre

For all the stick that Darmian and Rojo etc get there absolutely no guarantee the youth players are any better

Darmian doesn't need replacing. He never plays and we are overstocked in that area as it is.

Take the money and save on his wages.

posted on 29/8/19

Rob, Darmian and Rojo’s impact on the team the last few years isn’t hard to replace, even with youngsters, because they hardly ever play.

But losing Herrera, Smalling and Lukaku without adequate replacements is weakening the squad.

TFM has a bad injury I believe. His progress has been stunted by picking up injuries while out on loan, and the loan moves themselves have been very mixed. But he's a talent who can operate a few different positions, and he had broken into the Dutch team briefly, so it will be interesting to see if Ole gives him a chance when he's fit again.

In the immeadiate sense, yes, we are 'weaker' because we're two players down.

But would they have played much, clearly not if at all if we're happy to get rid.

Importantly though, if you were to ask any fan of the club how we improve the squad, in the long term there's two things we need to do:

1) Buy good players that suit the club: We've done that
2) Get rid of players that we don't need that aren't good enough: We've done that quite aggressively now too

Hence, we're improving the squad.

I'd rather we not lose Smalling as I rate him as a defender, but Tuanzebe is at the very least a replacement. I rate him very highly, but obviously we'll see on that one in time.

Agree completely about not replacing the other two - our midfield already needed a quality addition had we kept Herrera!

We may actually make some moves in the January window. You'd imagine Bruno Fernandes would still be gettable if we wanted to do it. Zlatan might be a short term back up option - or even Mandzukic who was touted in the summer.

There are players we could go and get, but we're desperately hoping we don't get hit with a bunch of injuries until then. It's a risk, but I blame the board entirely for it; they should have gotten more business done in the summer.

I think its more like the Italian clubs who are likely to be after Darmian (and Roma with Smalling) were willing to wait until right to the end of the window to make low ball offers that we would accept because we are more eager to get them off our books.

I doubt we would have accepted Roma's current offer for Smalling at the start of July.

I think we could be quite busy in January.

On another thread I mentioned that Joe Allen wouldn't be the worst player in the world for DM (I am basing that on his Wales performances though) on a short term basis for his experience, tenacity and pretty good ability on the ball. Also, Mitrovic could be an option (I know you've mentioned him before so probably rehashing your opinion but I'll still go for it!) up front. I would take Zlatan as well on a short term deal.

If we did feel creativity was an issue then we may well explore Fernandes again. I know perhaps the scouts weren't keen but I'm sure he'd have provided us with more of a threat as an AM than we saw last Saturday.

I'd sooner see us give Garner a chance than go for someone like Allen, but I agree with the rest - especially the Mitrovic bit!

I don’t think Tuanzebe is an adequate replacement for Smalling, BK. So we’ve downgraded that area as we have with Herrera and Lukaku. I’m pleased we are going to give the youngsters a chance but we also need to have quality proven players. This summer transfer window has been terrible. If we probably will have to rattle around in the January window to try and fix our incompetent squad rebuilding.

Berba - I'd love to see Garner getting a chance as well. I'm just anxious about our lack of experience in some parts of the pitch though. Balancing the squad with quality is Ole's next job IMO.

Python - I'm just speculating on who could be available, and not expensive, in January. Of course I'd want a higher quality player long term but, in the short term, I think the players I listed could make an impact. Even if it is only to help us get over the line in getting a CL place. I doubt very much we'll get top quality in January.

Yeah but Joe Allen...seriously
He is a 29 yr old currently playing for a team bottom of the Championship.
If our midfielders are no better than him then we may as well pack all their bags and start again.
We have missed the boat, we are likely to get feck all in January unless we manage to pick up some top bargain like Vidic or Evra but with the state of our scouts these days that’s unlikely. The whole club at the moment it is just a bit of a mess. Our next step as a club should be to get someone in who can look at the club and get the right transfers in and get the clown Ed off transfer dealings

I didn't say he was an "adequate" replacement, just that he is "at the very least" a replacement. Time will tell whether or not he'll be adequate (I think he will personally).

Obviously that's in contrast to losing Lukaku & Herrera who haven't really been replaced at all. Greenwood has been operating from the right so can't really be called a Lukaku replacement at this stage in my view. Plus he's 17!
