Berba - I'd love to see Garner getting a chance as well. I'm just anxious about our lack of experience in some parts of the pitch though. Balancing the squad with quality is Ole's next job IMO.
Python - I'm just speculating on who could be available, and not expensive, in January. Of course I'd want a higher quality player long term but, in the short term, I think the players I listed could make an impact. Even if it is only to help us get over the line in getting a CL place. I doubt very much we'll get top quality in January.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah but Joe Allen...seriously
He is a 29 yr old currently playing for a team bottom of the Championship.
If our midfielders are no better than him then we may as well pack all their bags and start again.
We have missed the boat, we are likely to get feck all in January unless we manage to pick up some top bargain like Vidic or Evra but with the state of our scouts these days that’s unlikely. The whole club at the moment it is just a bit of a mess. Our next step as a club should be to get someone in who can look at the club and get the right transfers in and get the clown Ed off transfer dealings
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll confess here that I don't watch enough world football to comment on all the world's players so that's why I'll stick with what I know.
What I've seen him do for Wales is use the ball quickly and try to be positive with it. He's also industrious and likes to put in a tackle. When Wales have been at their best he has often orchestrated that performance even if it is Bale who has grabbed the headlines.
I'd hope that the club could find better but his style is the kind of player we need for that position IMO.
Not every single one of our players have to be superstar names. I think it's far more important to get a balance.
Whatever you think of Joe Allen I do believe he is too good to be playing in the Championship.
Can’t see us spending any money in January seeing as how rubbish we were in this window
Think how we move forward will depend on us getting CL football
If we get it we should go all out for Maddison, Sancho and Neves
If not then it’s another game of ‘let’s promote the youth’
I personally don’t think Ole will be manager this time next year so we might have someone like Allegri being given a blank chequebook and perhaps this time we actually get Dybala đ
I see what you’re saying, but I’m making the point with regard to the op’s claims we’ve improved the squad.
We’ve getting into another debate about Maguire, I can at least acknowledge that we’ve brought players in to address the defence with Maguire, Tuanzebe and AWB being options in defence we didn’t have last season.
As you say, it’s in contrast to what we’ve done to address the loss of Herrera and Lukaku. Whether it’s Ole, the club, or both that have neglected this remains to be seen, but they’ve placed us in an unneeded position of pressure by doing so.

And if we got Allegri (please no) then we won’t be signing Dybala. They had real issues with each other towards the end at Juve.

Hi rdd
Darmian has played 13 times in 20 months.
It’s is a real worry that the club seem to be going into the season being reliant on a bunch of youth kids coming in and offering cover.
I’m all for giving youth a chance but in the right circumstances, and even then how many even make the step up?
Reading this board from some you’d think that Greenwood, Gomes, Garner, Chong and Tuanzebe are all gonna make the grade and be good enough for a team aiming to get top 4. In Ferguson’s entire time at United he only really managed to get around a dozen youth players make the grade, yet some seem to think Ole’s gonna get 3 or 4 of them to do so in one season while the club are in a mess.

I was going to do a thread about this but will add it here.
Man City had a 5 (ish) year plan with the ultimate goal of bringing in Pep. Most of this was behind the scenes and involved the set up for the club in terms of staff/coaches/facilities etc. Not a lot of people "saw" this but I believe a lot of peps "people" from his barca youth manager days were recruited.
Finally, with all the pieces of the puzzle complete pep was signed and he can in with a "trial" season and then we have what we see now at City.
Now I could be wrong completely here, but I see Oles role as one of clearing the way for a similar idea at utd. Not necessarily as in depth as City's or even with a specific manager in mind but a long term plan to get us back on track.
Since SAFs retirement we have been trying to fix what Moyes undid. We have bought players for quick fixes in certain positions and it hasn't worked and a realisation that it's all broken. A complete overhaul is needed
I for one see positives and am happy to take the stick thrown at us knowing (maybe hoping) that it's a plan for the long term.
Of course there could be harm and it’s a big risk to promote so many youth players while also removing a lot of experience and also expecting to get top 4, there’s always huge pressure at a club like United. You’re incredibly naive if you think this club will happily ignore this season and not expect some sort of result.
For long term results, it’s usually more beneficial to ease in youth, not throw a bunch of them into the first team and expect them to take squad roles so quickly. The sink or swim attitude to youth is a very risky one.

So rather than short term pain for long term gain you have short term pain and long term pain.
